View Full Version : How to ask Doc about OCD?

Hi,
I am certain that I am OCD. I have most of the characteristics (checking/rechecking,counting,handwashing and many more).
However I am unsure of how to bring this up at my next doctor appointment. I would like for my doctor to come to the conclusion without spelling it out for him.
For about six months last year I was convinced that I was HIV positive, and that I had all sorts of sexually transmitted diseases. Thankfully a negative HIV test put HIV out of my mind - but I still have relapses (I'm experiencing one now) of where I reconvince myself that I have STD's.
I have been married for eleven years and have two beautiful children. I have not cheated, and I am pretty sure that he hasn't either. I asked my doc a couple of years ago to run the gammet of STD tests for me - just in case.... Apparently they all came out negative - although I am not entirely sure of what the gammet of tests consisted of.
Anyway, getting back to why I am posting in the first place... how would anyone here suggest I bring this possible diagnosis to my doctor.
Thank you so much

I just noticed that someone posted pretty much the same question a few threads down. Sorry for not looking for similar posts before. Still would have been nice to be acknowledged though :(
Thanks anyway...

I am in the middle of an obsession about HIV right now and it is horrible.

I have changed doctors several times and I just come out and say I have OCD and they ask what I am taking, how it is working and if I need to switch.
I usually don't have to convince them.

it sounds like you have OCD and doctors are there to help. doctors are used to hearing about all sorts of bizarre ailments, physical and mental. you're not alone and your doctor has probably heard similar things. also, what i did was start out cautiously with less embarassing things and then as you get comfortable work your way up. just start by maybe saying, "Ive had a good deal of anxiety lately, and my symptoms seem similar to OCD" or maybe even "I am interested in discussing antidepressant medications for obsessions." find a doctor you are really comfortable with, one who is easy to talk to and non-judgmental. (yes they are out there). psychiatrist is often best. good luck
