I believe you are referring to Crohn's disease and there has been no link found to Crohn's disease and depression or suicide.

I really don't know how to spell it but that is what his family says he has. He use to be atleast 150 pounds but now he's just 100 pounds. He sometimes forgets to eat but not too often. According to his stepmom this disease can be quite deadly for some reason. I really don't know all the details about it except for the fact that he has to make himself eat because he's not hungry most of the time. He's been taking some meds for it but it seems to not be helping cuz he hasn't gained any weight. He told me that it is genetic yet nobody in his family has had it before. Has someone misdiagnosed him?

Crohns is an inflammation of the intestinal lining. First if he eats any grains especially wheat products remove from diet as gluten is a major cause of this. Secondly sooth the intestine with a good Probiotic (Kefir). You should notice improvement within a week or so. later !!

I do hope he is seeing a good gastrologist. crohns is a life long disease. Now a days it can be kept under better control with the newer meds. it is not deadly. But it can be very delibatating. He is not gaining weight because crohns causes one to not absorb nutrients from your food. No matter how much you eat. by getting the Crohns under control with meds he will improve. and gain some weight.
Stress does play a big part in keeping Crohns under control. Most people with Crohns do see that when they under stress the Crohns almost always flairs up also.If your boy friend suffers from depresion. Then he should seek medical help (meds) for the depression as this will help the Crohns also.
Crohns has shown to be genatic. But many people with Crohns have no family history of it.Enviromental factors ,Stress diet, and many things also cause Crohns. They has been some studies that suggest it can also be caused by the MRI vacinne.
He should be on meds. Is he taking anything?

Hi, I understand a little about Chron's Disease. I know a couple people with Chron's. I had Ulcerative Colitis which is similar. The medications people need to take can cause lots of side effects. Having an illness like Chron's can easily make a person feel depressed. It is very difficult to live with a chronic illness. He's lucky to have you. I'm sure your love helps alot.
If you have any questions, I'd be happy to help if I can. :)

I don't know what state UR in but here in Massachusetts at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, are some excellent gastroenterologists. If he isn't doing well he may need to find a different doctor. I speak from personal experience.
They told me my ulcerative colitis was genetic as well, but no fam history here either.
Guess it starts somewhere.

1. He start taking bacteria pills from a health food store and cut back on sugar products like softdrinks. The pills will restore a more natural set of bacteria in his intestines. He can also try eating bacteria active yogurt.

2. He should try taking DHEA which you can get in drug stores. Below I quote a recent article from a medical journal about Crohn's disease and DHEA.

-----------------
Aliment Pharmacol Ther. 2003 Feb;17(3):409-14. "Patients with refractory Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis respond to dehydroepiandrosterone: a pilot study." Andus T etall

"CONCLUSIONS: In a pilot study, dehydroepiandrosterone was effective and safe in patients with refractory Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis."

In that study, 6 of 7 patient with Crohn's disease responded very favorably to the DHEA. They took 200mg/day, which is a bit much for a young guy of 100 pounds.

-------- also ---------------
Clin Exp Rheumatol. 1998 Sep-Oct;16(5):579-82. "Blood and tissue dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate levels and their relationship to chronic inflammatory bowel disease." de la Torre B, Hedman M, Befrits R.

"CONCLUSION: These data indicate that low blood DHEAS is a feature in a majority of patients with UC or Crohn's disease."

Crohns is a auto immune disease. You need a med that is for that usually Pentasa, Imuran, 6Mp ,Methorex. Steriods are used to get a handle on the inflamation. Either Prendisone or Entercourt . Then a mantaince med like the ones I listed.
Crohns since 1970. 4 surgeries for it. And doing much better since the newer meds have been found for it.

Crohns is a auto immune disease. You need a meds..

Nobody knows what causes Crohn's disease, but there is mounting evidence that it is related to a problem with the types of bacteria/fungus in the intestine. Here is a recent medical journal paper investigating just that conclusion:

........... article 1 ...............
Nippon Rinsho. 2005 May;63(5):850-8. "Probiotics and prebiotics for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease" Mitsuyama K. Second Department of Medicine, Kurume University School of Medicine.

"Although the causes of inflammatory bowel disease including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease remain incompletely understood, increasing evidence implicates intestinal microflora in the pathogenesis of this disorder."

......... also ..........

Rev Esp Enferm Dig. 2005 Aug;97(8):570-4. Probiotics in arthralgia and spondyloarthropathies in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Prospective randomized trials are necessary. Karimi O, Pena AS.

"Based on preliminary clinical observations in patients with arthralgia and IBD, we put forward the hypothesis that probiotics may be helpful in the management of common extraintestinal manifestations such as arthralgia in patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease"
...........................

Consequently I suggest probiotics (pills with at least 5 different kinds of bacteria) as well as what ever meds he must take. As you already know, relying on meds alone doesn't work that well.

You didn't say wheather he eats Grains as there is a stong correlation with Grains especially Wheat irritating the intestinal lining. Also take L-Glutamine (10 gms per day ) to rebuild the lining..
