I want to get a tattoo for my first time and I was wondering what the aftercare for one is and if it is real painful. I want to get one on my upper arm near my shoulderblade. I want it to be of a black pather (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/tropicalremix/tigerbw.jpg). Since I really like black panthers. Any suggestions on what to do/handle the pain while getting the tattoo if there is a lot or little...

The "pain" involved is different for everyone - it also depends on the location of the tattoo as well as the artist doing the tattoo.

The best thing you can do is to have eaten a good meal before you go, don't go in scared, and just remember to breathe. Talk to the tattoo artist as you are getting it done, it will help take your mind off of the feeling and he/she will also be able to help by taking little breaks if you need them. I've gotten many tattoos - some by shops, some by me - and I have to admit that it never once hurt as much as I thought it would.

The aftercare is relatively easy - the tattoo shop will give you written directions on what to do to care for your tattoo, but it generally involves keeping it clean, keeping it out of the sun, and keeping it moisturized.

Another important thing to remember as you're going in is to NOT drink ANY alcohol or do ANY drugs (if you are into those things). A lot of people think that if they drink some alcohol beefore going it'll help with any pain, but that is not true and they will not tattoo you (or should not) if you have been drinking.

Last but not least, make sure you choose a design you are sure you will still want 60 years from now, make sure the shop is clean. Just relax and don't worry about it because the more you worry the worse the experience will be.

i don't drink or do drugs so i'm set there. I've heard a lot of good things about the place i want to have the tattoo done at. There called Blazin Ink: http://www.blazinink.com/. I write with my right hand so I might have it done on my left uppper arm.

My first tattoo was one that went all the way around my upper arm, and that inner part of your upper arm is VERY sensitive due to the nerve endings right in that area, so if you plan on having it go around your arm at all just be aware of that. Mine was swollen badly for about 2 weeks after that (only on the inner part).

I'm sure you'll do great though!

Keep banage on for the first two hours than remove and cover with a@d ointment. After a few days I was able to littly wash the tattoo. Maine thing was to keep the ointment on it and allow it to heal. When you're out in the sun make sure to use suntan lotion on it at all times that is after the tattoo has healed.
Sad thing today is that people are judged by the tattoo they have on their body :(
so you might wanta make sure it's in the area of the body that you can cover up.
Good Luck let me know how it turns out :)

I was terrified my first tattoo would hurt too but it wasn't as bad as I had imagined. 3 of my friends went with me and one held my hand and let me squeeze her hand when the artist got to sensitive parts (I got mine on my upper back, near my right shoulder). Mine is fairly small too, and it took only about an hour to do. After it was done and bandaged up, he gave me instructions on how to take care of it. During the summer, I also put extra sunscreen on it so no sun damage is caused. Good luck! :)
