DS is just 4 1/2 months so we have started him on the baby cereal. So far he's had the rice and we've just started introducing him to barley. Already it looks like there's a definite favorite. It takes half the time to get the same amount of the barley in as it takes to get the rice in. We haven't tried the others yet but if he continues to have a clear favorite, is it okay to feed him primarily that kind? Should I keep trying to get him to eat the rice or can he just have the barley since we don't have to fight him on it? Did any of your babies have a clear preference to one kind?

DS seems to prefer rice and I give it to him more frequently then oatmeal. DS liked barley but it gave him diaharea.

I didn;t even know there were other types of cereal. We went from rice cereal to veggies.....

Once you know that he is ok w/ barley, you can mix the 2 together, w/ portion of barley being larger since he likes it more. My DS's favorites change all the time, depands on his mood as guess.

I just do rice and oatmeal. I'll alternate the 2.

2nd day on barley. So far no problems although his BM was a little less than usual. Still a night and day difference with the cereals. I've never gotten anywhere close to the amount of rice in him as we did with the barley. He wolfs it down. We didn't even put a bib on, no spitting and he kept opening up for more. We'll go a few more days and then try the mixing idea. Oatmeal is next after we try the rice one more time.

My baby is also 4½ months old. How much are you giving and how many times a day? Just curious...as I wasn't given instructions on this other than to just take cues from the baby and make adjustments and progression that way. That's easier said than done sometimes.
I am giving cereal made with 1 oz of EBM and about 1½ tablespoons of rice or oatmeal...to make a slightly thicker than applesauce consistency. We do this twice a day (lunch and dinner)...then finish off the feeding on the breast. I'm going with 1 oz only becasue that was the instructions on the box of the cereal.
Just today I've decided to go with 1½ oz of EBM...still twice a day. She already had her lunch with the 1½ oz mixture and I don't think she even noticed she got more than normal.
I plan on starting vegetables when she turns 5 months...which will be in a couple weeks. I'm sure she'd eat them now if I tried. Not sure why I'm waiting for the 5 month mark.
Anyone care to critique on our feedings??? Please???
TIA...Gayle
