View Full Version : Is a Swing Necessary?

Mommie-2-B 01-24-2006, 02:13 PM My DH doesn't think so, what do ya'll think? I want to get one for my DS but we're debating. Thank you! Gayle0000 01-24-2006, 02:26 PM The only reason we have a swing is because we borrowed it from my brother. At first she showed no interest in the swing...but it helped a ton during the colicky period. It did take her a while to get used to it and we originally thought she hated the swing. After the colic went away and she became more aware of her surroundings, she now loves the swing. She is more soothed by the back and forth swinging motion than side to side like if we sit in a rocking chair. sweetea13 01-24-2006, 02:47 PM My ds is a day younger than yours and he loves his swing. It really depends on the baby though. He falls asleep in it. Does your baby liked to be rocked? Sometimes my baby just wants to be held but for the most part ours is a lifesaver! Mommie-2-B 01-24-2006, 02:54 PM My DS does like to be rocked, and he loves to be held. I thought that they had to be older before they can use the swing? I may be thinking about something else. sweetea13 01-24-2006, 03:33 PM I thought the same thing but this is a graco swing and it said it is for newborn and up. Just make sure it has a neck support or put one in it. This swing kind of reclines for a small baby and once they get older you can sit the seat up. He was just in it and fell asleep in about 15 seconds! Mommie-2-B 01-24-2006, 03:38 PM WOW!!! That sounds great!!!!! I feel bad that sometimes I have to lay my little one down while he's still awake. He gets in these phases where he just wants to stare all around. The swing would be perfect for those times. At least he would be somewhat entertained!! muffintop 01-24-2006, 03:41 PM YES YES YES YES YES!!!!! I was told to put it on my baby registry even though I was like "whatever, I don't need a swing" Boy was I ever wrong. Luckly some friends pitched together and got us the FP Blue Fish Swing (nice - wish it plugged in the wall instead of just batteries; there is one out there that does plug in the wall) but I am SO GRATEFUL they did. If you don't buy one yourself at least put it on your registry. As much as we love to snuggle, cuddle, and rock DS there are times you just have to put them down, the swing has been a lifesaver for those times (for us). Good luck with your decision. Happy (swinging) Babies Everyone! JustinsMommy05 01-24-2006, 03:49 PM It never crossed my mind not to get a swing. It was one of my registry items that we received. My DS hated the swing from day one. He cried everytime I put him in it. He loved to be rocked, and be in the bouncy seat....he loved everything but the swing! He's now 7 months old and loves to be on the play ground swings. I just don't know why he hated the baby swing....he always look all nice and comfy in it! lol......so unfortunetly for us, the swing was a big waste of money and space. It's now taken apart sitting under my bed.....I am hoping my next baby will like it. pittbulllover 01-24-2006, 04:53 PM YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was quite possibly the most useful thing we got! We have the ocean wonders aquarium cradle swing, it rules! We have two and it's great when we have both of the twins sleeping in them at the same time, it saved dh and I in the early days! We have used the swings since we brought them home. Laur77 01-24-2006, 04:55 PM Our swing was a god-send for us. It was the only thing DS would nap in for the first couple of months. Of course every baby has their preference though. You can use swings for newborns, as long as it reclines, and as someone else said just make sure they have lots of head support. babygirl224 01-24-2006, 05:19 PM Wow i wish my DD loved the swing!! I have a brand new Fisher Price one with the birds on it and a Fisher Price travel swing which I leave at my mothers house. She won't spend more than 5 minutes in either of them and she is almost 4 months. I thought maybe she is too young for it but obviously from the other posts, she just doesn't like it. dizzygirl 01-24-2006, 05:36 PM YES YES!! I swear it was the only thing that would put ds to sleep for about a month. It was probably the one thing necessary in my house besides diapers! I have the baby papasan swing, and I think it is the most comfy for little ones. Kiera1595 01-25-2006, 10:38 AM DS hated it...DD loved it. Just depends on the child. We used 2-3 small blankets to prop the kiddos up when they were newborns. I wish that DD still fit! AllTheLarsons 01-25-2006, 11:00 AM I think if you were forced to get only one baby item, it should be a swing. I swear, I'd get a swing over a crib for the first 20 pounds of a baby's life! I also think the Fisher Price Baby Papasan swing is the best on the market, wish it had been around for my first 3 kids. I wish they made larger swings for bigger kids too! Maxx09 01-25-2006, 03:14 PM It is absolutely necessary for my dd! Its what she naps in during the day.....and for those late nights we sometimes fall asleep in the living room and when she wakes up for a bottle we move to our beds. We have one that has the option of going side to side or back and forth. To sleep she likes the side to side, to just look around she likes back and forth. With two other kids it comes in really handy. My son used to love his car seat, I think he would have stayed in it 24/7 if I let him, and she hates hers. I would definitely invest in a swing. It has worked wonders for me! |
