View Full Version : How accurate is a barium?

Hi
This is my first post but I have had bowel issues for about 4 years. Right sided pain and weird bowel movements and wind and bloating. I had a contrast air barium (Is that what it is called?) and a sigmoidoscopy which was questionable as my pain is on the right. I have now found out that my lovely cousin who is only 39 has bowel and liver cancer. I am now doubting my own investigations. Is a barium accurate enough or should I have had a colooscopy?
Thank you

I had a barium 4 years ago, and, it did not detect any worms, which is what I had at the time. I had a colonoscopy Monday. I would consider getting a colonscopy because barium can miss stuff. They will put an IV in you for the procedure which will send a dye through your veins to your colon so they can see any abnormalties, to where as a colonoscopy looks at the entire colon and can really see it because its in there. They will even give you pictures!

Good luck!
