Hello!
my boyfriend has damaged nails from a work incident. they have been this way for a number of years and he is really self conscious about it. the thumb nails are hard near the cutical but soft at the tip, also in the middle where the soft nail starts there is a bend downwards in the nail. he says that when he tries to grow it out it becomes all bumpy and turns a yellowy colour. He wants me to put acrylic on the top to hide it. i'm not sure if it will even work but should i be covering the nail up- in particular the soft nail? if not do you know of any other solutions that can cover the deformity?

Please help!!

If he damaged the matrix where the nail plate cells are born, or the nail bed sustained damage, there is not much he can do except to change the way they look cosmetically. As long as the soft nail plate is not overfiled during preparation for the acrylic overlay, it should be fine. Unless you are a nail technician, I would not advise applying acrylic yourself. There is much more to it than it seems.
