emilyallison 01-24-2006, 05:25 PM When can I stop worrying about SIDS? Do the chances lessen after a certain age or weight? My DS is 3 months and I still stress all night and check on him constantly. I am doing everything youre supposed to, but I still worry and would love to know when I can stop!
Hi there!
I too am scared of sids and have heard different ages about when it's ok to stop worrying..so i'm just sticking to the year mark. I've bought the Angel Care Monitor and it has helped me a lot! It "ticks" when the baby is breathing. I've heard of people have false alarms due to where the sensor is positioned but i've had no troubles so far.
Just make sure you're following the guidelines...back to sleep..no smoking...don't overheat baby...etc!
Oh yeah..talk to your dr. I talked to mine and she made me feel a lot better!
take care!

Laur77 01-24-2006, 07:16 PM I've read the chance of SIDS happening is greatest between the second and fourth months, and almost non-existent after 1 year. I know it is stressful, but remember the chances of it happening are extremely low (1.7/1000). I have the AngelCare Monitor as well and it has certainly helped me get sleep at night. I've never had a false alarm either after 6 months.
Kiedy 01-24-2006, 10:21 PM I did some research on that myself b/c I wanted to know too, and like the last person said, after 6 month the risk is neglebile. Some sourced said after 4mo risk is very small.
cattieos 01-24-2006, 11:04 PM The risk is greatest between 4-16 weeks. and it is highest in boys born in winter.
i think the age is one also, but my great aunt dird from that when she was two. there is an adult version too! how much scarier is that???
Yahuh 01-25-2006, 07:37 AM Hugs. They are at their greatest risk between 2-4 months, which I know your DS falls right in there, but if you are doing everything as 'they' say, then ds should be perfectly fine!
Now go get yourself some sleep!

rouge 01-25-2006, 09:40 AM My son is 27 months and I still check on him. Anytime I wake at night I lay my hand on him to make sure he is still breathing. I was super crazy when he was a baby. Sometimes I would wake him up becasue he seemed cold or not breathing to me. With the next baby I am getting the angel care thing. At least for extra peice of mind.
BioAdoptMom3 01-27-2006, 10:56 PM Of course SIDS has got to be one of the scariest things in the world and statisitcs I know mean nothing if your baby is a victim, but keep in mind that the rates are extremely low. A tummy sleeping newborn has less than a 1 in 1000 risk and a back sleeping newborn, 1 in about 1500. Of course there are things you can do to help lower the risk, but even if you follow none of the "rules" your baby's chances of it happening are very, very small.

JuniorsMommy929 01-29-2006, 09:11 AM My son is just now 4 months old today, since he was about 3 weeks he would only sleep on his belly, he has always been able to lift his head, for like the first two weeks, i worried, but no longer do
Valerie_s 02-07-2006, 11:27 PM I have a question about the angelcare monitor, when the baby is sleeping there is no movement correct? oudnt this make the alarm go off? Can onone clearly explain how this monitor works? i will buy it if its worth it, im so paranoid and this is baby number three, lol
firsttimemom 02-08-2006, 09:10 AM Valerie s
The monitor is sensitive enough to detect the baby's breathing. Even if the baby is laying perfectly still it is still detecting his/her breathing. I have owned one since my DS was 3 months old and he is almost 6 months old now. It is well worth the money.
RandomName 02-11-2006, 11:35 PM My cousins baby died from SIDs about a year ago and he was 2 years old.
Sorry to hear that Randomname...now i'm scared again! :(
Valerie_s 02-12-2006, 03:46 PM My cousins baby died from SIDs about a year ago and he was 2 years old.
SIDS is categorized as an unexplained death of a child under the age of one, I sorry for your loss, but it may just have been unexplained
