View Full Version : Has anyone tried the bathtub seat/rings?

I was just looking on ebay for the heck of it and I saw some of the bath seat/rings that look kind of like a booster chair that sticks to the bottom of the tub. DS has been in the big tub since his cord fell off because he hated the baby tub. We use the sling that lies down on the bottom to keep his head above the water but he always has to be lying down on it. I sit him up when I'm in the tub with him and he enjoys it but I can't do it from the outside of the tub. He's too slippery! The seat looks like it would be great since it would help him sit up on his own. Has anyone tried them? DS is 4 months old and none of them say how old they should be before you try them. He sits up well with assistance but can't do it on his own yet. I'm going to look for one around here.

I got one when my son was able to sit up in the water. It wasn't that effective as I thought it would of been, see my son seemed to love water and was always trying to swim and always wanted to move around. So for me it wasn't something I will do again, but the concept is good and it does prevent the typical slip since they have strong suction cups on the bottom. It can't hurt to try, but if your child doesn't like it the second best thing would be to get those no-slip suctions you place on the bottom of your tub like I had to do...lol

p.s ~ I think they are recommended from babies who are already sitting up...(no sure though) but I'm sure it would do just as fine for those who are able to hold their heads up fine and are becoming more mobile.

I think there were actually some warnings about using those things. I thought about it when DS was starting to outgrow his plastic tub and read some bad review on them. So I bought an inflatable duck instead -- sort of like a wading pool, shaped like a duck that DS sat in, inside the tub.

Yes, in Canada they were taken off the market b/c of some deaths. I think it's b/c parents think it's safe to leave their children in there (for short period of time) and the seat tippes over.

I'll have to look into the warnings. Was your son able to sit up himself when you bought the duck? DS sits really well with support but can't on his own yet. We've put him in the baby tub in the big tub so he could sit up better but he slid all over the place. I was reading there was things to put inside to stop the sliding. I'll have to look into that too. DS doesn't care for the baby tub though, he likes to get his legs straight and kick around. His new thing is getting his legs straight up out of the water and then bringing them down together as hard as he can. I'm getting a little worried about the sling thing we use. It was good when he was a newborn and he was still in the water. Now he flails around like crazy and I'm constantly moving him up on that too. I'm a little worried I'm going to be reaching for something and he's going to flail himself right under the water. I'll have to keep looking for something.

DS could pretty much sit up by himself when I used the duck. I still kept a good grip on him though. Sides are inflatable like a kiddy pool, so at least it's soft if he slips around.

The duck is great, you can get it at Target, it's made by just one year. Those other things are just plain dangerous!

Well I got one of those bath rings as a shower gift and I just tried it for the first time last night. It slid all around the tub; the foam thing kept bunching up; my sons skin was red everywhere he was rubbing against the ring; I couldn't get in anywhere to wash him....needless to say I didn't care much for it. I ended up taking him out and just holding him in the tub. I would like to find something a little better too!

When we've gone to hotels. I usually put a bath towel in the bottom of the tub since it's usually so slippery, or wash DS in the sink, but last summer we stayed in a cabin that didn't have a tub, just a shower. So my mom went to the dollar store and got an inflatable swimming pool -- teeny tiny and put that in the shower. Worked great! Not as sturdy as the duck, though, but did the trick!

I finally borrowed a ring from a friend, b/c I too couldn't find one anywhere.
My DS is one year old and has bee in the bathtub for several months. He started out just fine sitting there, but he soon realized how much fun it was to dive head first into the water and 'play'. Well, it's hard enough on my back to bend over the tub anyway (does anyone have a comfy solution for this?) that I started using the ring so he would stay sitting and I could wash him. He has toys he plays with and he really doensn't mind it. And I of COURSE wouldn't leave him unattended for even a second! So - try one if you think your little one can sit up well enough..just be very vigilant as I know all of us are!

Good luck!

I did see one of the rings at the store yesterday. I thought about it, but didn't pick it up. It was only $10 so I was thinking maybe later. It suggests about 6 months so I'm thinking he has to have a little better control first. Most of the accidents have happened when the parent left the baby alone, or with older siblings and since I wouldn't leave him anyway I'm not too worried about that. Seeing Laur77's post about the skin irritation made me think otherwise again though. Last night I gave him a bath in the kitchen sink. He seemed to like that, but he was hard to hold on to. I'll keep looking for the duck type. Has anyone every brought them into the shower? DH was saying that you put a tight body suit on them so they aren't so slippery and you can take them in. I was scared I'd drop him. Anyone tried this?

The ring thing cut my son's leg. It was pretty bad, I really suggest you don't waste your money. The duck thing ( mine's a turtle) is a blow up thing, almost like a little baby pool, that goes in your tub. You can find it online at Target.

Now you really made up my mind. Poor boy, why would they make them able to do that?

I have a tub that turns into a seat. I hate it and wish I had something else. It's not so bad when I put the foam bear in it but otherwise has a lump that would normally help them not slide foward in tub form digging in her back. I could see this one getting her leg if I put her too far foward. I only use it when I have to give DS and DD a bath by myself.

I know, and it kills me to see it on peoples registry's. They really shouldn't sell it!
