My DS will be a month old on Sunday and he usually goes 3 hours between feedings. Last night we fed him at 9 and he ended up spitting up a TON of his food, but he went right to sleep. I didn't hear from him again until 2:30 am, and he was just barely waking up. He wasn't crying or anything!! He didn't even have a dirty diaper, just wet. So I fed him at 2:30 and put him down and he didn't wake up again until 6:30 am. 4 hours!!!
Should I be alarmed? I know eveyone says to never wake a sleeping baby but this is a little extreme, don't you think? I am very thankful for the wonderful night of sleep I got, but I can't help feeling odd about it.

Congratulations!! How did if feel? They say the baby should eat every 2-3 hours and 1 5hour stretch. I remember that from when I first had him, but I think as long as they are eating well, having a baby sleep through the night is fantastic! Don't be alarmed. The first time it happens you freak though, I did. I checked to see if he was breathing and everything. He probably spit up because he had so much to eat. So, he had to sleep it all off.

Don't worry, he'll let you know if he's hungry. Enjoy the sleep!

Okay, so he just did another 4 hour stretch. Maybe he's starting to go longer between meals?? Isn't he too young for that?

how much does he eat at feedings? formula fed babies tend to go longer then bf babies. I think its ok, but if you are worried, ask your doc

He is breastfed so I don't know exactly how much he's taking in. When I do have to express and feed him through a bottle, he takes in 4 ounces, sometimes 5!!

I was told by the Dr to never wake a baby up at night to eat. During the day wake them up to eat, not at night. Maybe your baby is on the way to forming good sleeping habits at night by waking him up you are interrupting them. My cousin's DD slept through the night from the day she was born.

From the day she was born!! That's amazing!!! I've never heard of that before.
I don't wake him to eat, but I do watch him like a hawk. :)

my dd slept through the night like that from about 1.5 month on, so I think your lil guy is fine, like I said if you are truly worried, a phone call to the doc could ease your worry a bit. good luck

You should do a happy dance, because it sounds like you have a good sleeper. :D It drives me nuts that people drill that 3 hour rule into your head when all babies are different. Like everyone else says, let him sleep and enjoy it. He may go through a growth spurt soon and start eating more frequently. Babies tend to have a growth spurt around 6 weeks.
Congratulations on your new little one :)

Okay, the doc says that I'm a nut and to quit worrying so much! He went 6 hours between meals last night so it sounds like he's developing a new habit. I thought it may have been a fluke, but it's not!! He

Congrats! Nice when they start that. It's hard not to worry a little. When DS started doing it at first I kept waking up at his normal waking times and lying there waiting for him. Several times I got up to check. It took a while for me to just go back to sleep. At the very beginning we were told to wake him every few hours. Worst advice I ever got! He was so angry when we woke him up at night. It took hours to get him back to sleep and he screamed like crazy. I understood, I don't care for being woken up out of a dead sleep either. When we let him get up on his own, he would have his bottle and be back in bed in an hour or less. No fuss. By the time he was 12 weeks he was sleeping from 8:30-6 and now he goes from 8:30-7:30. Consider yourself lucky.

I wish it only took an hour!! It takes a minimum of an hour and a half and it's usually 2 hours for me!! I am breastfeeding, so that naturally takes longer. And he like to suck after the breast(s) is(are) empty for a while until he falls asleep.

DS just started doing the same thing. I am trying to get him to bed later so I don't have to wake up at 5 or 6 in the morning! I HATE MORNINGS!!!

My baby girl has done the same thing. It is really scary when it happens. I have found that she is in a much better mood when she wakes in the morning after those long stretches. : ]
I breastfeed as well and I have found that she cluster feeds a bit afer these really long stretches. Anyone else notice that?
