im not sure i spelt that right but i was wondering have any of you guys had one put in and are you awake while they do it??? does it hurt real bad???? i wont be able to let them do that if im awake. do they do it after you are put to sleep??? are there any complications with sticking a tube up your private???? not looking forward to that. with my first surgery, the laminectomy i didnt have one. oh i found out that the three level lumbar laminectomy is common in 60-70 year old people, not for a 28 year old. all my docs and a comp doctor want to know why the comp doc did that operation. but if i wanted to sue there are so many laws that protect the docs and the comp insurance companies, so its a waste of time. maybe someday the laws will be a little more 50-50. im real scared still and the days seem to be going quick, they were draging at first.

Any time I have needed a catheter I woke up with it AFTER surgery, so they put it in while I was knocked out. There was one time after one surgery that my urine output was low so my Doctor ordered it back on and it was uncomfortable, but not TOO bad. My husband had to have one and said it wasn't that bad (he was conscious) .. hurt just while they were putting it on. But, I have a feeling you will be knocked out when they put yours on, that seems to be the normal procedure.

Hey there,

I think if they put one in for you, especially if it's a long surgery, they will do it while you are under anesthesia so you'll never know and then take it out afterwards...

The only reason, I'm pretty sure, to keep it in is if you are not going to be able to pee on your own....

You are having quite an extensive surgery so they might leave it in for you since I don't know the time frame for you getting up and moving around but they also can bring a bed pan for you as well.

So, you can ask the nurses this while you are in the pre-op room while they are doing their last exams, setting up the IV, etc....

If for some reason they take it out and then have to put it back in later if you have trouble peeing, then I would think that you will already be on some heavy duty pain meds that you should be able to hit the button every 10 minutes so you can hit it, they can do this 5 minutes later, and then hit it again and it will be somewhat painful but for a quick moment....

Hugs and blessings,
Ingy

The catheter is put in while you are under anesthesia. Believe me it is a good thing and it is a great thing after surgery as I was in no mood to get up and go the bathroom. It was not pleasant having it taken out though, but quick. If they want you to get up and walk around for a little bit and you still have it in, make sure that you are carrying the collection bag or that the person that is carrying it does not walk ahead of you as you can probably imagine the problem with that. I am talking from experience believe me

Have had two operations and both times it was put in during surgery. I've found when they pull it out to hold your breath and tell them to be quick. It does serve well by you not having to get up those first few hours. Good luck and God bless

I just had neck surgery on Tuesday and they put the catheter in while I was out. But I wished they would have left it in until I was able to get up and go to the bathroom on my own. I had 4 levels worked on and the first night in the hospital they had me on alot of IV fluids and I had to call the nurse like 4 times thru the night. by the time someone got to my room and got the bed pan under me either I over filled the bedpan or it got spilled 3 times because the bed was wet and they had to keep changing my sheets, I think it would have been better to have the catheter until I was able to get around. It felt like I was peeing the bed.

I had one and they removed it the day after surgery. I could not go and they threatened to put it back in. I had to pee so bad I said go ahead and put it in. I was hurting from all that fluid built up in my bladder. It is no worse than a IV or a ESI.

They also put my daughter's catheter in while she was out. her dr wanted it pulled the day after surgery. I know they worry about infection, but the nurses couldn't tell me how she was going to use the bathroom when they hadn't taught her how to walk yet. No one mentioned the bed pan or bedside commode. So the resident said to leave it in one more day. My daughter was happy because she didn't have to get up, but her dr wasn't happy when he came in Sunday morning and it hadn't been pulled. That's the one thing I didn't admit to having anything to do with. cas

Yes, as everyone else has said, they inserted it while I was under and then they removed it while I was in lala land with the morphine drip. I didn't feel anything at either time. I know it is hard not to worry about everything, but just think that there is nothing that can come from the worrying...I know, easier said than done ;) I will keep you in my prayers for the next few weeks. Keep us posted when you come home and are up to sitting at the computer.

Hugs and prayers,
Lorie
