Hey guys, its been awhile! I'm not doing too bad and even went off my meds a few months ago but recieved some crummy news about my mom a few weeks ago. I've noticed my sleeping pattern is starting to get a little off (consistantly) and I was thinking about getting some sleep meds for it before it begins a spiral into the rest. I've never used them before (terrified of the thought I'll become dependant) and was curious if anyone had any recommendation or advice on them. Thanks! hope you're all doing well

I have taken a few kinds. Most of the ones over the counter contain the same ingredient Diphenhydramine. It's also the same ingredient that is in Benadryl. So it's basically like taking a cold pill. The only difference is Benadryl has 25 mg of Diphenhydramine and something like Sleepinal is what I have here has 50 mg of Diphenhydramine. I've never taken them on a regular basis to know if they are addictive or not. The ones I have are many years old and probably expired I take them so rarely. One thing you'll notice with a sleeping pill is it will make you more tired the next day. I call it the sleeping pill hang over. The sedating effects seem to take a long time to wear off. For me I can feel overly tired from them for 18 hours. You could try them they are not dangerous or anything. If you are under a lot of stress you may not notice the feeling tired the next day though. It's probably not a good idea to take on every night though.
I use Tylenol PM. I've used it on and off for years and have never noticed an addictive quality.
Also, it does not give you the typical "hangover" the next day. I take mine about an hour before I want to fall asleep, and make sure you leave yourself 8 hours to sleep. Don't take it if you only have 6 hours to go.

Tylenol PM is nothing but tylenol with generic benedryl in it.

before you take any over the counter med, check with your doctor or the pharmacist to make sure it does not conflict with any other med you might be taking
good luck
