View Full Version : what is this orange stuff in my son's urine?

For the past few weeks I have been noticing a small amount of shimmery orange goo in my son's diaper after he urinates. At first it was just a little dab, but now there seems to be more of it and I actually saw a little drip of it coming out of his penis hole. He doesn't seem like he's in pain and he doesn't cry when he urinates. I asked his ped about it, and he said he has no clue what it could be and if he isn't in any pain then not to worry too much about it. I read something on here that it could be caused by dehydration, but he isn't dehydrated and his doctor even checked him for dehydration and there was no sign of it. What do you think it could be? Should I take him to another doctor for a second opinion?

Here's a picture of his diaper, so you can see what I mean.

I would get a second opion. Very strange! Your doctor is basically giving you the "If it's not broke, don't fix it" answer. YIKES!

Go somewhere else and have him checked. I agree with mommie-2-be!
That isn't normal at all! Even if it turns out to be nothing, you will feel better about having it really looked at by someone else.

Looks like the crystals that form in their urine when they are dehydrated. DS had the same thing, except slightly more red. I freaked. He didn't seem dehydrated, but he had that a few times as a very small baby. I'd ask another doc and would be a little weary of a doc that says they have no idea, when I'm pretty sure it's those common crystals.

My son had that right after he was born. The nurse said it was uric acid crystals and not to worry. She did mention it could be a sign of dehydration so make sure they are getting enough fluids.
I would be pretty leary about a doctor who doesn't know what something is so just says not to worry about it.

How old is your baby? I can't believe your doctor said he has no clue and left it at that! What kind of a doctor would say that? Get him checked out again and see if that NEW doctor is accepting new patients.

I too would get another opinion, but have found that it could be urate crystals...which are normal, soft, like tiny cubes of Jell-O.... sometimes smushed. It does appear that they are more common when children are a bit dehydrated and can show up in healthy babies at anytime.

Apparently sometimes orange food or some meds (such as rifampin) can be the culprit for orange smudges in the diaper too !!

That is really odd looking. My first thought was orange foods. Also some foods and meds (like iron pills) but a baby shouldn't be taking those I wouldn't think, so I would definetly get a second opinion!

definitely time to see a new ped, really.you do not want a doc treating your child who when they don't know what something is,to just dismiss it,oh yikes!!please ask around from friends about who their children see,I honestly would not feel at all comfortable in continuing with this doc at all, really.just to be safe, please take him to a new doc.You DO have the right to stop seeing any doc for any reason when you feel the need.a second opinion on this is definitely needed,at the very least.Hopefully this will just eventually disipate.Marcia
