I am on 225mg of topomax a day and i ache in my legs constantly on a daily basis; however, I hurt like that prior to being on the topomax. I do think though that the meds have made it increasingly worse. I have only had 2 migraines since on it so any side effects is wort it to me. Plus i have lost 10 lbs. Also on klonopin & flexeril for muscle spasims & cramps for the nuero is still trying to rule out possible ms. Not only do I have BAMS(Basilary Artery Migraines) but I could also possibly have multiple sclerosis. Oh well, we have to take the hand we're dealt.
How long have you been on the topomax? Did you increase your dosage very slowly? That's the whole key to it. Go slow! I've had excellent results, but it's not right for everybody. Some people heve tried zonegram, maybe if this doesn't work for you, you could ask about that. Best of luck to ya.

I have been on 100mgs for approximately 2 1/2 years & I have just started having these muscle/joint pains for the past 2 months.
As much as I love Topamax but, hate the side effects, I do not like it one bit.
Going to do my own research on zonegram. If I like what I read, going to ask my Neuro about it. :)

Thanks for bringing Zonegran to my attention.
I just did my own research. I don't think this drug is for me. It's sort of like Topamax. Basically does the same thing. However, what I don't like about it is that one of the side effects is: "headaches".

I've been on Topamax 100mg for almost 3yrs now and don't have the joint pain but I do have the tingling hands like crazy!!! Also could be due to nerve problems in my neck ....hard to decifer. Have never heard of Zonegram. I may have to check it out. However the Topomax has worked for me. I went from 3-4 Migraines a week, literally!!! ....to maybe 2 every 3 months or so. Not bad at all! :) The only ones I get now are related to my neck. I'm afraid to switch to anything else since it took almost 8yrs to find something that worked and two trips to the ER with allergic reactions. One with Depakote and one with Botox.

Well, my next Neuro appt is next month (Feb). I think I am going to ask the dr if she will reduce the Topamax dosage will that eliminate the aches & pains?
I am also going to ask how many YEARS can one take Topamax for migraines *safely* w/o the side effects lingering PERMINENTLY?
I could not find anything about this during my research on Topamax.
Me thinks no one really knows as they are *still researching*.
Anywho, will post the doctor's response here in this post. Dr appt is 2/15/06
PS: You know I have to print this out, because by the time I click on this post, I would have forgotten all about it because of Stupidmax/Dopamax (Topamax). :D

Well, I had my Neurologist appt this AM. Results:
Neuro has never heard of muscle and/or joint pain side effects from Topamax. None of her other patients on Topamax have complained of same. Apparently I am the first!  I know I am her oldest paient w/migraines at 55 years young. :D
I asked how long can one take Topamax *safely*.
Unknown.
Topamax is a *new* wonder drug for epilepsy w/a side benefit for migraines. So far so good for long term benefits.
Me: So in other words, even though this drug has been approved by the FDA, epileptics & migraines suffers are basically still guina pigs as far as long term safety measures are concerned. ;)
Recommendations: Have arthritic blood work done by my private doctor (GP).
Good News: Doc reduced my mgs. I now take 50mgs daily instead of 100mg starting today. If the migraines increase then I am to go back to 100mgs daily.
So evidently, she must *suspect* something other than arthritis. :nono:
