I am a single female who enjoys giving oral sex. Growing up I never heard the dangers of getting std's from oral sex and am just starting to realize there are some doing a little research. I find the CDC website very overwhelming because they basically tell you that you can get every disease known to man unless you use condoms for oral sex and intercourse. I believe the truth of the matter is that hiv carries a low (but perhaps possible) risk when it comes to oral sex but does anyone know about Hepatitis B? I didn't even know there was a vaccination until I came across it today, why doesn't school teach you these things??? Anyway, my boyfriend has all the symptoms of hepatitis B or A and I'm the only one he has had sex with in over 2 years. I have only had oral sex with 2 other people in the past 2 years. He went to the dr and his blood tests will take days to get back and I am upset at the possibility that I could have given him this disease if I did in fact contract it from one of my oral sex partners. I've read on some websites that you can get Hep B from oral sex and some others that say it's probably possible but has never been proven. I've never had any symptoms but I know that doesn't mean much. Any insight would be helpful.

My Friend acquired HBV from giving oral sex to a former Heroine junkie so I would say yes you can get it from oral via mouth-stomach contact..as for Hepatitis vaccines all School age Children as well as health care providers and probably Food handlers are required to have them.

hi Feisty,

Don't torture yourself--the tests are quick, common, cheap, and available at any MD's office or clinic. Hep A is the most communicable, but also the most likely to have serious, noticeable symptoms, and the least likely to go chronic (long lasting). So, it is not so very likely that either you or the boyfriend have had A, although not impossible.
hepB, on the other hand, like C, is possible to catch sexually (b seems more likely transmitted this way than C, but either can happen) and b (0r C) can often result in a chronic infection that reveals itself not at all through any symptoms for a long time. Testing is the key.

It's just a matter of a couple of vials of blood--so why not find out? for the sake of this boyfriend, any future same, and for your own peace of mind.

Hepatitis B is spread thru bodily fluids, i.e. sexual contact, sharing utensils. For almost 10 years now the Hep B vaccination has been on the schedule for all children and its especially important that adolescents be vaccinated. Starting this year, children will also be vaccinated for Hep A. If you havent been vaccinated, you might consider a vaccine called Twinrix which is a Hep A & B combination vaccine and requires three shots, just like the single Hep B vaccination would. Hep A is usually contracted thru contaminated food. (usually someone handling the food usually didnt wash their hands properlly after using the bathroom) IF you become infected with Hep B, YOU can spread it thru oral sex.

So if someone already has the Antibodies for Hepatitis they aren't required to have the Vaccines? What if they have B can they still acquire A,C et al if they don't have the Vaccine for those strains?

As far as already having antibodies for Hep B, not sure if being vaccinated would help. There is a vaccination for Hep A and it would be wise to get the Twinrix vaccine which protects against both A & B. Each type of Hepatitis is different and yes, you can get all or any of them. Currently there is only a vaccine against A & B. Hep B has been on the schedule for children and as of this year, so is Hep A. Health care workers are advised to get it. Food handlers are usually not required to have it because of the cost and because of the high turnover (but Hep A is typically acquired because of poor hygene in food handlers)

I'm gonna mention to her so she can ask her Physician.I would think she only has Antibodies for HBV so could still get other strains if not Vaccinated against them.

Thanks!
