View Full Version : High Deductible Plans and Pregnancy/Mental Health

I am so confused. My husband and I both have full time jobs and our own health coverage through our employer. My coverage is very good, though the premiums are very high. My husband's plan is a high deductible plan with a health savings account. He never goes to the doctor, so he has no experience with using this.

Well my monthly premiums have just tripled. My boss is going to absorb some of the extra cost, but not much. Apparently I can join my husband's plan without an added cost to him every month? That doesn't sound right to me...

Anyway my real question is that we are trying to start a family. I also need mental health care and one prescription drug. Are prenatal visits (say one per month) and mental health visits (3 times/year) covered, or am I required to pay for all of those out of pocket? Also prescription drugs?

Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks!

Call another agent and ask if you can get a new plan for the both of you. However, if you know there is a mental health problem you should ask the agent about that as well as maternity. Maternity coverage is expensive and mental health sometimes has limited coverage. Best you talk to several agents who represent major, well rated companies. The HSA plan your husband has may be a good thing if he is making deposits to his HSA savings account. You are right, 2 people on a plan is more expensive than 1. Make sure you have know exactly what your husband has as you have several options.

You have to pay everything out of pocket until you reach the deductible limit. Then your husband's plan will start paying.

You pay out of pocket from your health savings account. Money you put in the health savings account does not have to pay income tax.

Maybe you could try to estimate all your expenses and then figure which plan is cheaper: the higher premiums or to pay out of pocket up to the deductible. Just figure everything both ways under both plans and then choose the best one for your budget.
