I am having tonsillectomy in 10 days (2/10/06)!! I was told that I have to re-learn to swallow because food can go up your sinuses. You know, you can get one end of a piece of spagetti through you nose and the other end out you mouth. Is it true? I'm not a fan of pain and I have read some of the post about post op pain. My ENT gave me my post-op pain script, Lortabs, and I have been getting the refills so I have them here waiting for me. I have had chronic tailbone pain for 9 years now and this will be my 12th surgery. I know that the surgery will be good for me in the long run. I always feel run down because my immune system is constantly fighting infection from the food (stones) pieces that get stuck in the "holes" in my tonsils. I just wish this was already over!

Hi. I had mine removed at 36 years old. I had a great recovery. I was up and feeling much better by day 5. The pain med made me very sick and I switched to extra strength Tylenol liquid. You may want to pick some up just in case. My best advice to you is to drink water, as much as you possibly can. I drank very cold ice water constantly and basically numbed my throat through the recovery. The more you swallow, the less it hurts. I'm not sure about learning to swallow again. I didn't have that problem. You will do fine, and you will be so much happier after you recover! Good luck, and post back on how you are doing if you can.

Have no idea where anyone got suc an idea about food getting in your sinuses. I had mine out at 27 and i"m now 60. Never had this issue. You'll be SO glad you had them out. But let me warn you, you will feel like you were run over by a steamroller. I didn't have that much pain swallowing but just couldn't lift my head fromthe pillow.

Thanks for all the experiences! I've read as much as I can on both of the surgeries (I'm also having my septum repaired) and I beleive that after the first week, I'll be just fine. I'll post after the surgery and let you know how I am. :)

OOh! Both at the same time??? Yikes! I had them done separately...don't think I would have liked both at once. But they do the septum differently now so maybe it would be OK....let us know!

The doc told me he will fix my deviated septum, reduce the "fleshy things" (Turbs) and take out my tonsils. So magine my surprise when I went for pre-op testing and read "and Adenoidectomy." I now understand that they take the adenoids whenever they do tonsils, kind of like when they do a hysterectomy they take your appendex! Oh well. I would rather the doctor do everything he can at the same time. This will be my 12th surgery and I REALLY don't want another one. Well, my last surgery was open shoulder surgery. Extremely painful because they shaved on my bones twice. Is it worse than that? :) I really appreciate all the advice and you can be sure I'll try what worked for you. Hopefully, some of it will work for me. At least I have lots of people praying for me and I know that the Lord will help the doctor and me.

Doc said everything went great. He found a bone spur while fixing my deveated septum and said my right tonsil was very difficult to remove. So most of my throat pain is on the right side. Well last night was not too bad, up every 4 or 5 hours for pain meds and to change the sinus "mustashe bandage". Today, however, just a little worse than last night. I had to call doc for liquid pain med as swallowing the pain pill was a choking adventure not to mention that swallowing anything liquid is a choking adventure. Popsycles, on the other hand, are great!! :) Nose and neck are swollen. I expect that tomorrow will be the same as today or a little worse. On the up side, I don't feel like I have for the last 6-8 months! Just let me know if you want me to update on my progress. :)

I was told by an ER doctor, my tonsil had removed. But I never had any throat surgery!?!?!?!? Not even when I was a baby! I was very upset at that time because they took away something on my body without my consent?
I put my post on one of the forum and said that, "now I need to go and find my tonsil!" A lady told me, tonsil will strink (disappear) by itself when you get old. If she knew by early, she wouldn't go for tonsillectomy and pay the big buck and suffer the big pain. My GP told me it is true, some tonsil will strink by itself. I'm 47 yrs old and my tonsil leave me for no reason.

I wish!! Mine were extremely large for as long as I can remember. I only had a hole the size of a dime to swallow through. :)

Day 2
Hi everyone,
I just finished eating some Cream of Chicken soup and choco pudding mousse. So I thought I would send you an update while I'w up. Worst sore throat ever imaginable!! :blob_fire Hubby will be happy today because I can hardly talk!! Apple juice is much easier to swallow than water today. I have been told that day 3 is the worst however I can’t imagine a sore throat worst than this. God bless the inventor of Popsicles!!! Well, back to ice packs and bed.
I'll talk to you later. :)

I just squeezed tonsil stones out of my wretched tonsils! I'm also sick, now. I'm 23 and I'm still not brave enough to take the necessary step that you've already taken. Just think, soon you'll be fully healed and rid of your troublesome tonsils.
Hope you have a swift recovery! :D

Day 3
Emergency surgery on Monday night late for bleeding 2nd time. Went to ER at 7PM because bleeding. Sent me home after hour of no bleeding. Got home, sat down, bleeding started again. So on to large hospital. Lost a lot of blood before surgery, about 1.12 pints. Doc found 2 veins seeping and cleaned up scar bed and pumped 200 ml (.422 pint) of blood from my stomach. :blob_fire I really thought I was going to die!! Clots blocking air way. Felt like I was drowning! :blob_fire Scared dear hubby and mom! Stayed overnight, discharged Tuesday about 10am. Doc said that quite common to have bleeding problem on day 3 after original surgery in adult tonsilectomy. Not trying to scare anyone, if you need it done then do it and be done. Starving!! Ate cream of chicky soup, choco pudding, and 12 oz. milk at 4:30am. Lost 6-7 lbs. Pills put fear in pit of stomach. Choking hazzard!! Swallowing kind of easier, low grade fever 99 to 100. Staying in bed again today as still very weak and pale and reall sleepy. Update later.

Day 3 again!!!
Here's an update! Hubby says I have more color back in my face today. I still think I look real pale. Hubby took me to doc appt. this morning. Doc said that bleeding like mine falls in 1%!! We are now at day 3 again!! (Because of emergency surgery) My hemoglobin count was 11, the lowest "normal" level before they have to do a blood transfusion. I have to take an iron supplement for a month or so. I still have a stint in my nose and I still have to sleep in an almost upright position!! The pathology report said that I had "chronic tonsillitis with benign lymphoid hyperplasia." The largest tonsil measured 3.5 cm in diameter!! Hubby stayed home today with me and will tomorrow just in case the bleeding starts again. We still have to get past day 6-8 before bleeding risk is mostly gone. Next check up is in 2 weeks. Please pray that I have no more problems and a speedy recovery.

How many tonsil do we have? I thought is only one. Mine one had left me so I wouldn't get sore throat anymore, right? Thanks god.
I'm wipping my sweat after seeing your day 1, 2, 5 and 3. If I were you, I think the whole hospital will let me turn upside down. I probably will asking I want to sleep. I don't want to be awake and feeling that pain.......
You take care and keep us posting.

so, I am curious for those who are completely healed after getting their tonsils out. The doctor mentioned to me several times, that my throat would feel different after surgery(of course) but after it was healed as well. He said the throat sometimes just feels smaller, etc. Does anyone notice this at all? I am thinking it honestly can't be worse then having the large tonsils to begin with. But he said the scar tissue would make the throat feel different. Just curious on people's opinions on that!

well I finally had my tonsils removed yesterday, i'm 33. It isn't going "too bad" right now. I was only in the hospital from operation time 7:15 am to being let home at noon. I'm taking my meds around the clock ;) and so far anyhow it just feels like a bad case of strep, which i've had a lot of in the past! So 'right now' anyhow I can't say it's a lot worse then that, but will keep posted on day 3!

Day 23 (because of my emergency surgery!) Well, I still have a few days before I'm out of the woods for bleeding accourding to my doc. He said I have a lot of healing to do yet. I have a strip of skin right beside the uvela then there is a space, then the tonsiluar bed. The doc said that it should grow back together in time. If it doesn't then one of two things can be done, either he can stitch it together-which is very difficult, or he can just snip it off. I'll go for the second if it doesn't grow back together! I am to still eat a modified soft diet for the rest of this week then just S-L-O-W-L-Y add foods, no citrus, no running or jumping, and no lifting anything heavier than a gallon of milk (weight training is out) for the next two months!!! :bouncing: The up side of this is that I can now start to work in my veggie garden and get it ready to plant and work in my flower gardens. I still am not to lift a heavy laundry basket and run my Kirby vacumn for more than one room at a time. My sinuses are healing just fine. I do wish that my taste would come back. :bouncing: I can only taste in the very front of my mouth. Most things taste like cardboard, it really doesn't matter what it is. I can smell just fine, though which is not fair because things smell so tasty until I eat them!! I still sleep quite a lot. I'll be happy when I get back to normal. I'm just so thankful that the Lord didn't take me on 2/13! I still have work to do here. ;) I'll let you know when the doc releases me and how things are going in a couple of months. :)

I lost a lot of blood-my hemmoglobin count was 11 and the scale for normal started at 10, so I didn't need a transfusion, thank God! I looked so pale when I got out of the hospital. I do have to take an iron suppliment for a month. It's something I'm so glad I don't have to go through again in my life!! :)

You guys are scaring me! lol.. I'm 41 year old male going in on May 9 for tonsil removal. On May 19 I'm supposed to be on a plane to attend my daughters graduation in NY (I'm in California). Then the following weekend, after flying back to NY, I'm supposed to hike about 5 hikes with full backpack during Memorial Day weekend in Upstate NY. I figured I'd be fully healed in two weeks.. Am I dreaming or what?? I'm in good physical shape (workout 4 times a week). :D

Hi Atoms,
You may want to postpone your surgery until after your daughter's graduation. You're not out of the woods for post op bleeding until day 14. It would be really bad for you if you started bleeding on the plane. The bleeding doesn't stop by itself and if it does, not for long. It usually takes surgery to stop the bleeding. As we age, it takes our bodies longer to heal. I'm at 10 1/2 weeks post op and still have some things that are going to take a while to finish healing. Please reconsider flying on a plane and cancel your hike. I pray all goes well in your surgery and you don't have any problems. :)

Hi Princess,
I'm sorry to hear that you have to have a second surgery. After having 13 surgeries in my short 45 years, I know that scar tissue forms after each incision. You'll have to ask your doctor if your scar tissue is from an infection, however, I really doubt it. It's just part of surgery. Please let me know when your surgery is and how things go. In the mean time, I'll put you in my prayers. I'm sure things will be just fine. :)

I also had the bleeding. On day 14 post tonsillectomy exactly. I'm 42.
Sorry to scare you but
you need to know what can happen. It is very scary to leak
blood into a container and have it just keep pouring out, with no way to stop it.
It has now been 4 months and it is still painful for me to speak. So much so that I may have to consider going on disability, as I need to speak quite a bit for my job.
I don't think adult tonsillectomy is worth the risk.
That's my 2 cents. Call me bitter.

Had mine done on April 25th, i'm 29 years old. I actually was eating soft foods such as eggs and noodles from day one. Drunk powerade and gatorade the first 2 days. The 3rd and 4th days was the hardest. Had a hard time drinking anything. Anything i tried to drink was room temperature. Cold hurt bad. After the 4th day, started feeling better each day. Actually ate a piece of pizza on day 11. Went back to work on day 13 and worked a 14 hour shift. Today is the 16th day. Eating solid foods pretty well. Still some very minor pain. Hurts to cough and yawn. It wasn't nearly as bad as I've heard, so I guess I was lucky. No major bleeding or problems either. Good luck to everyone who has the procedure and I hope that you have a good experience.

I am just onto day 3 post-op and it's scary to think that there's still a good 8 days of pain left...and that it's going to get worse before it gets better! I think i'm just about at the stage where cold hurts which is annoying cos ice has been my saving grace til now! And i'm too scared to eat anything remotely warm as i don't want to bleed! My main food so far has been soggy cereal, egg and sandwiches.
This board has been a massive help to me both before and now after the operation...nice to know you're not alone in going through this crazy process!

Hi Gergurk,
Please don't be scared. :) We all just want every one who has had these surgeries to be aware of the different things that can occur while healing as well as what you should stay away from and what you should do. Every one is different and has different “side effects”, for lack of a better word. You might try mashed potatoes, no gravy though; pudding; yogurt; ice cream; Jell-O; macaroni and cheese, the white cheese was better than the regular mac and cheese; broth and light soups. Don't eat anything crunchy; any tomato products, they have too much acid; bananas, they too have acid; no citrus including juice; no onions and nothing spicy or anything else that burns your mouth. I avoided anything that tasted like cardboard after a test taste. I drank milk with everything I ate to help wash down what I had trouble swallowing. And I still do at 12 weeks post op! My bleeding wasn’t from eating anything warm. It was from choking on my pain “pill” the day after my surgery that was prescribed by my ENT! If you are having trouble swallowing pills, please, please get the liquid pain medication. Luke warm was how I ate my food and ice chips were soothing to my mouth. Make sure you take your pain medication BEFORE it wears off for the first week. Its takes awhile to get the pain back under control if you let it get out of hand. (I’ve had chronic tailbone/low back pain for the last 9 years and had to learn how to “manage” pain. That’s why they call it “pain management.”) Please be sure to follow your doctor’s instructions. You’re doing fine right now. Please keep us informed on how you’re doing. :)
Hi 2catfans
Thankyou so much for responding to my message..I can't tell you how much it means to me right now. I went to bed last night and within 10 minutes I was up and off to the toilet (I seem to go every 40mins with all the liquid i'm drinking)...except this time, I had a funny taste in my mouth and when I spat in the sink a big blob of red blood was smirking back at me - oh boy did I panic! I managed to stuff my mouth full of ice and put a cold pack on the back of my neck and the bleeding was contained within about 10 mins...apart from the first big bit i spat up, there really wasn't much at all, but for the rest of the night I was petrified that if I went back to sleep, I would start bleeding again and not wake up until it was really serious! Thankfully that did not happen, but i'm still walking on egg shells...i've read that if you bleed once, there's a high chance you will bleed again. It feels like every time I swallow, it's going to set it off again. Should I still be aiming to eat and drink as much as possible since this has happened?
I'm just about at the end of day 3 now and since this little bleed last night, the pain has gone from about a 5/10 to a 9/10...that ear pain that happens is unlike anything i've experienced before. The painkillers don't even touch the sides it seems!
My next problem is the potential of constipation. My pain killers are codeine-based and I know from previous experience that it binds me up pretty badly. I haven't had a bowel movement since before the op (3 days). When it finally comes time, I'm not sure how i'm going to get it out, cos if I strain at all, that pressure will increase the risk of bleeding again. I'm taking stool softeners and extra fibre to try and help, but so far it's not looking good. Sorry for the extra info there!
I'm definitely at the point where I'm wondering why I decided that this would be a good idea - and it's only day 3! I'm such a wuss!!
sorry to prattle - and apologies for future prattling...it seems to be theraputic :-)

Hi Gergurk,
CALL YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY!!!! RIGHT AWAY!! I was told that if I had any post op bleeding to call my doctor IMMEDIATELY!!! I'm not trying to frighten you however, it could be serious. When my bleeding original began, I didn't know it. I just woke up coughing like I had a lot of mucus, all weekend long. I couldn't taste the blood. All weekend I felt bad, very bad. I couldn't get warm and I was under an electric blanket with another blanket over that! I hurt all over. My ears, neck and throat were excruciating, 15/10! My Hydrocodone was like taking an aspirin! And all of my bones and joints just ached. I lost 8 pounds in 2 1/2 days!! The ER ENT was NOT happy about that! It turns out that the pain pill I took Saturday morning had broken open 2 small veins and they were seeping for 2 1/2 days until the major bleeding started Monday night, DAY 3! My sweet husband called the doctor and was instructed which hospital to take me to. By the time we got to the hospital, the bleeding had slowed down and the emergency room was ready for me and took me right up to surgery, again. When they finished the second surgery, the doctor told my hubby that they pumped 200ml of blood from my stomach! And with what I lost at home, we figured I lost a total of 1 1/2 pints of blood!! If I had just one more bleeding episode, I would have needed a blood transfusion! My ENT said the risk of bleeding is on days 3, 6, 7, 8, 14, and if you have any post op bleeding, then day 21 too; although bleeding can happen at any time. I was now stuck on a soft diet which lasted for 4 weeks. You should eat a soft bland diet. I ate mashed potatoes with no salt, vanilla pudding, vanilla ice cream, and vanilla yogurt for 3 weeks and we added white cheddar macaroni and cheese in the fourth week. I drank milk with every thing to help wash food down because it would get stuck in the back of my mouth and I couldn't get it with my tongue. I found that crushed ice (we put ice in a blender and pulverized it!) and ice chips felt and tasted the best after the emergency surgery. Please, please call your doctor for me. Please let me know how you're doing and what your doctor says. My prayers are with you. :)

Hey Gergurk,
I forgot to tell you what I was told to use for constipation 9 years ago while I was on morphine and a catheter (for bladder repair, my bladder was really mad!). The nurses in the hospital gave me equal amounts of prune juice and apple juice, warmed up to lukewarm in the microwave (I suppose room temperature would work), and then drink it. It really tastes bad but it really works. I use it if I need and I give it to my sweet hubby! It might take a day to work. I buy the prune juice in the little cans that come in a six pack. That way it doesn't go bad. We don't drink prune juice. I always have apple juice around for my hubby. I wouldn't worry about not having a bowel movement for three days, though. I didn't either. Remember, you haven't had much solid food so there's not much in your system. And you're not "prattling". It was very therapeutic for me too, and still is. This was a real scare for me, my sweet hubby and my family.

thanks for your replies harlee and 2catfans.
Harlee - i reckon the only thing keeping me going at this point is this message board and the irrefutable (spelling?) proof that things will get better no matter how bad it seems!
2catfans - you must have sent a telepathic message to my boyfriend, as he called my surgeon earlier today. My surgeon was suprised that I was bleeding so early, but was happy enough that it had stopped within 10mins after ice. He said to take it easy, stick to eating cold foods and call if it happened again. So I guess I'm a little more comfortable knowing he's not stressed about it...although after hearing your story, i'm not so sure. I'll just be extra cautious and try and keep an eye on the bigger picture...if the pain gets any worse, i think ill have to go to hospital anyway to get stronger pain relief. By the sounds of it, pain relief in Australia is a lot weaker than what is prescribed in the US!
Thanks for the constipation remedy...I'll add prune juice to my wish list for tomorrow's shopping :-)
My partner's just come home with an entire season (about 45 epidsodes) of one of my favourite TV shows on DVD...God bless him!!!
Hopefully tomorrow will bring some relief - even just for 5 minutes!!
Thanks again for all your words
Sarah.

Hi Sarah,
I've been praying for you and I thank the Lord it was answered. As you can tell, I couldn't sleep. I was just about to go to bed, it’s 3:30 am here and I thought I would check to see if you read the posts. Just so you know any bleeding is not normal. I'm so thankful that your doc knows. Now he'll be ready in case you have more. When my bleeding started, I couldn't talk, I just grabbed a bowl and hubby called the doc and had me at the hospital. So you do the same if it happens again. And it might, although I pray it doesn't. Just in case it does, it's real important that you don't panic. It will make things worse. I'm going to give you some graphic info that you'll need and no one has said yet. Sorry. If you should start bleeding again, you will have to get the clots out of your mouth with your finger. They stick to everything in your mouth and they look like liver. I had one that went from where the tonsil was to way down my throat. I couldn't get it out and I couldn't sit up. I had my chin tucked in and my head on my knees. If I moved from this position, I couldn't breath. This clot would block my airway. I fainted when the ER ENT removed it and my hubby said it was very large! I'm promise I'm not trying to scare you. I just want you to be aware of what could happen and how serious post op bleeding is. I was given codine-based pain medication at home and for a second dose post op. I don't know what the medication was in recovery or the first dose in my hospital room. Just continue following your doc’s instructions. Please keep me posted. I almost died from my post op bleeding. God’s speed for a safe and uneventful recovery. I have charged my angels to watch over you.

Thanks for the extra info 2catfans - you really have been through the wars you poor thing!! Bonus points to you for coming through it all! The idea of something prolonging this recovery really is horrific.
So I'm coming up to the end of POD #4..no bleeding thank goodness. Unfortunately no relief with the pain either so far. The pain meds I have are like eating candy (pity they don't taste as nice).
How do you know when the scabs are coming off? I was hoping above all hope that the intense pain increase I experienced a day or so ago was a sign of that, but realistically, I think it's just too early for that to be happening. Which leads me to my next terrifying thought...that the pain will get even worse from here? Best I not even contemplate that at this point...one day at a time hey! When the scab pain does start...does it tend to last for days on end, or is there usually one day that's worse than the others with a gradual reprieve?
Is it common to be nauseus around day 4? I've had some really nasty bouts of nausea today (no vomiting thank goodness!!!!!). It seems to happen when I drink...that mixed with the pain isn't really encouraging me to keep my fluids up...i know i have to, but sometimes it just gets the better of me.
Many years ago I learnt the alphabet in sign language...very handy at this point where my voice just isn't cutting it.
I'm tackling a cold omlette for dinner tonight...it smells so good...oh cruel world! heheh :-)

Hi Sarah,
I'm so sorry you're in pain. :( I really can't tell you when my scabs came off, however I believe that happened when my thrush broke off so that was day 8.
Try not to worry about the pain or anticipate it. Yep, one day at a time. :) I promise it really does get better. You will have your good days and bad days, and nights for that matter. Just listen to your body and get plenty of rest and eat as nutritious as you can.
Be sure and take your pain meds with food. I took my meds in the middle of my meal and didn't have any nausea. Otherwise, you'll need to get some anti nausea med from your doc. You don't want to be vomiting. Or sneezing, for that matter.
I used a straw to drink everything. I still do. You might try some crushed ice or ice chips. That helped me keep my fluids up. You don't want to get dehydrated. That's bad.
I know. We'll be cooking and it smells so good and then it tastes like cardboard. It's so unfair!
I used a note pad when I had to talk a lot. I dropped words that I really didn't need. They said I sounded like the Indians in the old movies! Hehe! How!! I thought I sounded like a child just learning to talk.
It is a horrific thought! My doc says it will take me about a year to get completely over this. Yuck!!
Please keep me posted on your progress. I sent you a legion of angels to watch over you and help you heal. I won't stop praying for you until you are completely healed. Get some rest and I hope your omelet tasted good. Talk to you later.

Argh - more bleeding!
I work up this morning and there was a tiny bit of blood when i spat in the sink...i didn't panic but got all my ice and ice packs together ready for action. I then had my partner look at my throat and he found a blood clot almost covering my right tonsil bed! I guess that's good news that it clotted on it's own, but bad news in the sense that it's going to bleed again when the clot breaks away !!!
Called ENT and he said to keep sucking ice and try and flush the clot away.
Why do i get the feeling today will end back in hospital!! On the bright side, at least i'll get some decent pain meds back there!

Oh Sarah!
I'm so sorry!! :( I wish I could say that it won't but mine bled when the clot came off. I hope yours won't.
You did the right thing by calling your ENT. :)
Well, another upside of having to go to the hospital, if you do, is that you most likely won't have any more bleeding.
My sweet hubby and I just had an important prayer answered this morning, so I know that the Lord is listening to us. We will keep you in our prayers and I have sent more angels to help you.
Please let me know how you're doing. I'm not sure what the time difference is between the States and you. It's 9:50 pm Monday night.
I'll talk to you when you post again.
Prayfully yours,
Catfans

Hey All -
Thank you for your words of wisdom and experience, I'm seeking some insight as well. I am 33, had my tonsillectomy on Friday morning, it is now Tuesday night, day 5. The pain is still substantial when I'm at the end of my liquid medication perscription (2 tsp every 4-6 hours). I've been trying to only take it every 6 or even 7 hours, but the pain does get nauseating by then. I am eating only jello, mashed potatoe, mashed sweet potatoe, water, apple juice, an odwalla protein shake. Other foods smell so good, but i can't eat them. I drink a lot, probably 20 glasses of water.
My question - what should I be seeing in the back of my throat? I look back there and I see a white/yellow mucus covering everything behind the Uvula. The whiteness, like a fuzz sorta, is even lining the sides of the Uvula. In the back of my throat, under the white stuff, are some dark red or black dots. There isn't any bleeding. The white stuff seems to cover the whole back of the throat. Sometimes I cough up a little flemmy tasting stuff (sorry, gross), but no blood. The throat feels raw, but looks scarier. Is this right? I'm taking my antibiotics as well! Any help is appreciated.

Hi Jsantoslyons,
It sounds like you need to call your doctor and tell then what you said here. Your symptoms sound just like mine did when I had thrush, which is a yeast infection of the mouth. If your doc says you have thrush, he/she will prescribe medication for it. My ENT prescribed lozenges that I had to dissolve slowly in my mouth. I had thrush for 2 1/2 weeks. It was no fun and it hurt really badly, as you read from my earlier posts. If it hurts to eat, or more like it burns, continue mashed potatoes, no salt; and try vanilla ice cream, I used a brand that was as natural as possible with very few ingredients; vanilla yogurt; and white cheddar mac and cheese. I couldn’t eat Jell-O, it burned my throat. Crushed ice felt good on my throat. Please be careful of the amount of water you consume. Too much is just as bad as too little. I know my throat was so dry. I couldn’t keep it wet enough. And even at 13 weeks, I still can’t. I wasn't prescribed antibiotics. Thrush is a side effect of both antibiotics and the steroid injection that is sometimes given at the end of surgery, which caused my thrush.
When you call your doc for your mouth, ask him/her for more liquid pain meds unless you don't have any trouble swallowing pills. And if you need pain meds, by all means take them. There is no reason for you to be in more pain than is necessary. Try taking your pain meds with some food. That helped me with nausea.
I hope this helps. Please let me know how you are. I'll put you in my prayers.
G'day 2catfans,
Thought I'd drop a post updating my situation. I haven't ended up back in hospital (yet!)...the big clot that was covering my right tonsil bed seemed to break away partially...it's about half the size now and is covered in more white/yellow stuff! It actually looks disgusting, kinda like a tonsil is growing back - which i don't want to even contemplate!! I will not go through this again no matter how sick tonsils make me! heheh
Anyway, I have an appointment with my ENT tomorrow so I'll bombard him with questions, and if he is happy with my progress, then I will be soooo much more comfortable!
I finally have had a small reprieve from the pain! after 6 days of agony, I had a day of only moderately severe pain that is FINALLY responding to pain killers...wahooo!!!! :bouncing:
Given I'm on day 7, I know I'm still very much in the 'danger' period for bleeding (more!), so I wont get too excited, but a little light at the end of the tunnel just blinked at me ever so quickly today...hopefully that light stays a little longer and gets a little closer each day from here on in!
Will let you know what my ENT says!
Thanks again for all your kind words and thoughts :-)

Wow, some of you are having absolutely horrible experiences! I am a 41 woman and had mine removed on June 21, 2006. (Today is day 27.) I read an awful lot of horror stories, and prepared myself for the worst, and it was a Walk In The Park! I didn't have any pain to speak of. After surgery, it was a VERY, VERY minor sore throat! After day 1-2 I didn't think I needed the pain meds, but was afraid not to take it. So I continued until day 4. I did make sure I drank 8 glasses of water (and ice chips), partly because it was easy to swallow, immediately after the surgery (for that day), because somewhere I read it will take the anesthesia out of my system faster, and there would be no urge to puke that evening. Never bled. Took five days off from work. My doctor said she did a COLD DISSECTION. NO THERMAL BURNS. ALL VESSELS WERE TIED OFF. (hence, "tied", so no bleeding afterwards. Brought the chances of bleeding/clotting down to 5%.) -At this point I don't care what the technique was called, but just knows it's easy as pie:) So I wanted to share a more positive experience with readers, who like me, expected the worst pain/experience of their life, and was pleasantly surprised. Oh, and my instructions from my ENT was, among other things, to drink plenty of water and DO NOT COUGH, or CLEAR YOUR THROAT.

Hi, yes my experience has too proved to be easier than I thought. No bleeding, pain was very bad days 4 to 7 when it became hard to swallow water, but you have to keep going with it, distract yourself, take regular medication. By day 10 I was out and about collecting our french visitor. Now at day 13, still not eating spicy or acidic things and yawning is uncomfortable but I feel I have sailed through it, you only have a few really really painful days but keep positive, keep a routine going and you will sail through. Don't come off the pain relief too soon. I am still taking voltorol 3 times a day with the occasional paracetamol but you get to the point that you actually forget to take them because the pain is now a mere discomfort.
Good luck to all!
Good luck to all!

I'm 54 and in Seattle. Had the surgery 3 weeks ago although I almost backed out after checking out this site. I decided to just take some of the good advice and be satisfied with that.
The surgery was a breeze thanks to excellent drugs. Actually, the first night was good too since the excellent drugs didn't wear off right away.
Days 2, 3, and 4 were not fun. My doc gave me Percoset (1-2 every 4 hours). I did some quick math in my head and decided that taking 1 pill every 2 hours was the same. It really helped me stay ahead of the pain. Best part was I stayed stupid all the time so got plenty of sleep. I was also given a great anti-nausea pill that dissolved on my tongue which I did end up needing a few times. By day 3, I remembered what Percoset does to a girl's constitution and sent a friend to the store for a laxative. Whew.
I didn't even try to eat BUT, I did take the hydration part very seriously. Cranberry juice and flat Diet 7-up were the best. I also chewed gum (yes, that was hard) and almost always had a sugarless throat lozenge going to keep me salivating and swallowing.
Didn't even think of trying anything like ice cream or pudding cause dairy really does make phlegm in your throat and I can't even stand the thought. When I was ready for some food, egg-drop soup from our local Chinese Restaurant was the best. It slid right down and tasted sooo good.
Well, long story short, I had arranged to take 2-3 weeks off from work for this but I GOT BURNED!!! Felt completely better by day 8 and went back to work. Throat was and is still dry in the morning but that's it. I feel great. Except the part about not getting to stay home for 3 weeks.
