I know I know babies are messy, but do you guys have any ways you use to minimize it? I sometimes think that a garbage bag over his head or one of those dog cones is the only way to keep the damage to a minimum.

Right now I use two bibs, one close to his neck and a bigger one that covers his shoulders. Between holding his hands, the food far aways from him, and a toy to entertain him/keep his attention, it's a messy production. The best way I like is when I put a big cloth/receiving blanket around his neck (as if he was getting a hair cut), but I don't have enough of them and I don't want to wash them everyday (I don't have THAT much laundry to do).

What do you guys do to minimize the mess?? thanks for sharing.

Unfortunalty, it's SUPPOSED to be messy! Thats the fun and thats how they learn.
You can't keep their hands out of their food for long and also they sometimes suck on their hands to help swallow food.
Just go with it, take a deep breath and get a dog, theyll clean up anything that falls on the floor.

I have some great bibs that have sleeves and are really long so they practically cover her whole body. It's kind of like a back to front jacket with just a velcro tab around the neck so very easy to slip on and off. The ones I have were given to us by a friend and they are towelling but I have seen the same design but in a plastic material so you just have to wipe it down rather than washing it.

Another suggestion....feed you baby wearing only a diaper! That way, when the meal is over you can go straight to the bathtub. :-) And you won't be getting a zillion bibs dirty.

Feed your baby while he is naked, in a kiddie pool, while pointing a garden hose at him.

JK. In all seriousness, feeding your child wearing only a diaper is the best way I know how to keep the mess to a minimum. That way you can wipe him clean with a wet rag afterward.

DH hates the mess that DS makes so we have come up with a few things. For one, he always goes in the high chair, bib on. We also have a splat mat for the floor. We have toys that are washable that we have on his high chair tray. We also let him have his own bowl and spoon. We spoon feed him and when he is done, we take all the toys away and they go in the dishwasher. Then I give him a wet wash cloth to play with. This takes care of most of the mess and then I clean up the rest. Wipe down the tray and we are good to go.

Thanks guys, I think feeding him in his diaper is a good idea, afterall, everything is dirty after that anyways. I actually washed his toys today too in washing machine, but dishwasher would work too. thank again

Yep the diaper is the best way! I can't wait for summer to come back around, I am going to feed DS next to the pool, completly naked and then dunk him in, jk. Although if he is eating something really messy like spaghetti of such I might actually do that!
I actually think that a bib makes it worse, DS just puts it in his mouth, and I think the same about toys. We just feed him as fast as possible and constantly battle his hands.

I don't prefer the diaper method of feeding. They do need to learn to eat neatly. It takes a long time but eventually they get it. My 2 y/o gets upset now if he gets food on his clothes. Plus it is easier to clean a bib than a squiggily toddler. We used two bibs (at the same time) when he was at his messy stage. The bumpkin bib which has long sleeves and ties in the back and the baby bjorn bib that is plasticy with a big pouch in the front to catch everything that falls down. When he got a little older we just used the baby bjorn bib. I have thought of that bib as the best thing I ever purchased for my DS.

I have always encouraged him to eat by himself and was a pro with a spoon at an early age. He always sits at the table with us and eats his meal when we eat ours. If he starts to play we take him down figuing he was not hungry.
