I started a new job back in November (mail carrier) and I average about 5 miles a day walking. Since starting that job, I have lost almost 40 pounds. I never imagined that walking would help me out that much! I am not even dieting yet!!!! I am starting a diet next week to keep my weightloss going. It's just unreal to me to think that 3 months ago I had 90 pounds to lose, now I have 50 to lose.........thanks to walking!!!
Just thought I would share my little story on how walking is helping me! Best of luck to all of us who are trying to lose all of our excess weight.

That's great, congrats! Walking is how I get most of my cardio too. I do around 4.5-4.6 on the treadmill and recently I have just started jogging. I start off walking, do an extra mile jogging and finish it off walking. Usually do about 40 minutes to an hour straight.

4.5-4.6 are you talking speed or distance? If it is speed how do you walk that fast? I have to jog to go that fast! or is that your jogging speed?
When I started out I couldnt even Walk because I would get Shin Splints...so I was using an elliptical. Now I have lost 55lbs and now I go for 40 minutes on the treadmill, no more shin splints!...1 minute walking then 1minute Jogging. evenually I want to get up to the full 40 minutes jogging.

I wounder what the difference is in the two?..walking out in your neihbor on payment or cement sidewalks vs walking on a treadmill....excuse me pipermac..I don't know what a "elliptical" is? lol..sorry you have to excuse this stupid okie....lol

That's walking. When I started a year ago, I started at about 3.6 and as I got myself back into shape it has gradually gone up. It is a comfortable, fast walk - not a jog, not a trot. When I jog it is around 5.1- 5.2

oh, and that's on a treadmill. I switch up the elevation. I usually walk anywhere between a level 6 and 10. man you can really feel that in the bootie and when I jog I drop it to a 2.5 to 3.5 otherwise i would flap out if i kept it higher.

Mmm...maybe our treadmills measure differently...on mine as soon as I get above 4 its too fast to keep up without jogging.....and I have always considered myself a fast walker.

I'm sure it is the differences in treadmills. In the fitness center there are 2 brands. If I get on the tru model, that's what i normally do and keep the pace listed above. if i get on the other model i have to do a 5 to just walk at the speed i do on the other one with an incline of 7 or 8. so as much as that one is behind, slower the one you use is more than likely ahead, faster of the one i use. probably depends on the brand and year, design

It's ironic that you this conversation came up because I remember reading Self magazine once and they considered 4 to 4.5 to be a brisk walk. I thought, there's no way I can keep a steady walk at that level because that's a running level for me. I just thought it was because I'm short. On my treadmill, when it's over 4.0 I'm jogging too. It has to be the differences of the treadmill. I have a Proform.

Try an elliptical walker if you REALLY want to feel a burn in the bootie!
I find 4.5-5.0 on a treadmill to be a speed walk that really requires a bit of "hip twisting" to keep it up.
Above that speed (near 5 mph) I break into a jog that really must either go faster or slower because it feel all wrong...too fast to walk, too slow to run.
Right around 4.5 my gym's treadmills blink the warning "it is not recommended to grasp the hand sensors (to get heartrate) while RUNNING." For some reason the elliptical doesn't ever feel like running or walking, you just keep going faster seamlessly. I don't know why!

I think the difference might be in the setting... I have my tredmill set in Kilometers. I can walk comfortably at 5KM's per hour... which would be a speed of 5.0. If I were to jog it would be closer to 7.0... keep in mind I have very short legs lol Not out of shape lol :jester:

Geez, you guys are lucky to have that kind of results from walking. I nevdr lose weight form walking, but then again, I only have 10 or 15 to lose so those pounds tend to be a bit stubborn. Of course, I never stick with a program long enough either, LOL. I always want results after one week.

I been thinking bout buying me a good treadmill anybody have any recommendations?
Also has anyone ever heard or see/used a health rider?
its a machine where you sit and pull yourself up and down works almost evey part of your body and its hard to do I can only do about 15 so far, I also have a stationary bike I ride for 30 minutes or so...
I can't walk round my neihborhood either I live out of the city limits and my neihbors have pit bulls that are out lose and there mean....so I have to work out inside my home...I can't afford the gym.

I have a Nordictrack treadmill and semi-brisk walk on it is around 3.6-3.8. 4 is hitting a slow jog. For a decent speed jog I would set it anywhere between 4.5-5. Obviously the incline is pretty different from machine to machine too, because I would tend to keep it between a 2-3 incline. 7 or 8 for me would be like climbing Mt. Everest. Of course, not just the machine matters, but also your height. I am about 5'4" but I have relatively short legs and what is a jog for me, is just a brisk walk for some of the taller folks. The settings on the treadmills at my local gym are always different than mine and vary between their brands as well.
Chevyman, I have been happy with my Nordictrack. I got it from Sears. Sears often has lots of good deals on treadmills, especially toward the first part of the year. I will say though, for those that are looking, even though they are slightly more expensive, you might want to consider a good elliptical machine over a treadmill. From personal experience (and a lot of gym trainers will tell you the same thing), you get a much better work out on an elliptical machine. I can often burn almost twice as much in calories in the same length of time on an elliptical as I can on a treadmill. A lot of that, in my opinion, is because you can set the elliptical at a more difficult level because you are not getting the impact on the legs/knees like you do on the treadmill. Doctors will often recommend the elliptical over the treadmill for that reason alone. That is the advice my mom's doctor told her as she has bad knees. I also tend to get shin splints at times on the treadmill when I really get into a walking routing, but that has never happened when I stick with the elliptical machines. If I had the money to do it again, that is what I would spend it on this time around.
Also, just as an FYI, you can often get a really good deal on floor models of exercise equipment, and they still have the same warranty as a new one. Mine was about a $1,100 treadmill, but I got it for about $650. It is better even than some of the ones at my gym! Also, before you buy you might want to check out http://www.epinions.com for reviews of various brands of treadmills. They even break it down by price category.
