View Full Version : Communication Methods

I am looking for any suggestions for a low-tech communication method when hands and arms are no longer of much use. My mother has resisted the high-tech computers and such all along. We're at a point now where she can still write just a bit with her left hand, but it is getting more and more difficult. Her frustration levels are rising and I feel helpless that I can't help her much. I did make some flash cards with basic sayings, but it's only a matter of time till she can't use those. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Ria

Ria, if you want to stay low-tech, the only other things I can think of
are word or alphabet boards, where the person indicates the letter or
word that they want to express. There are some good computer voice
simulation programs out there, even high-tech ones that use visual
indications instead of keystrokes, but I imagine they're very expensive.
This is from about six years ago, when I lost my dear mother to ALS.
I would go and talk to a local specialist. etc.
Trying to maintain a decent quality of life is, in my opinion,
the biggest and best thing you can do for an ALS patient.
Communication is a big part of that.
Best of luck to you in dealing with this horrible disease.
Regards,
Bill

Thanks for the tip Bill. I found out that our Hospice group has a speech therapist on staff and we've ordered them out. Hopefully they will have some valuable suggestions. I've looked at the computers but at this point they are way out of our range.

And I totally agree, trying to maintain a descent quality of life is the best thing you can do.

Thanks Again, ~ Ria
