How do people get aerobic type excercise in? I have a drop foot & have a hard time walking. I would like to try to get my heart beat up, but can't do the excercise? Any ideas?
Thanks

I too have dropfoot, what I currently do is a recumbent Schwin excersize bike. 15-20 minutes, when the weather warms I swim every day. Its the only way I can feel somewhat normal due to the buoyancy. Its almost like what it would be like for us on the moon 1/10 gravity.

Since I developed significant balance problems, I've been unable to exercise other than walking. To get aerobic benefit I bought a stationary bike (the kind with the seat that allows you to rest your back - the word for it has escaped me at the moment! ). Would that work for you?
good luck! kelpie

Thank you. When I go swimming the repetitive kicking action tires out my foot, same with biking (the repetitive pedalling).

What about those machines I've seen at the gym that are pedals for upper body? It's like a stationary bike, only you pedal with your hands/arms.

Do you live near a YMCA? I joined in November and I take exercise classes in the shallow end of the pool, there are 2 classes, one follows the other, I go 3x's a week, for 1 1/2 hrs. and it has given me energy that I have not had in 2 years. It is remarkable and wonderful. :bouncing:
Also at the Y they have that arm machine that lilc was taking about, plus, they will accomodate you for what ever you want to do, or any machine that you want to work out on, and they do have exercise classes for people with limitations.

I have only been doing slow stretching on a mat. I find that any exercise that makes me sweat also makes me dizzy and weak. I stretch at home in a very cool room. Gyms tend to be on the warm side. "Normal" people want to work up a good sweat, but it wipes me out. Any of you have this problem? Just curious - Sharon Grace  ps - I have been thinking about a stationary bike which I can use at home, if I keep the room chilly.

Sharon Grace, I get dizzy if I work up a sweat. I should say dizzier, if that's a word. I got an elliptical machine last month, so can exercise in my dining room. I can do 20 minutes, but I have to hang on to the stationary handles and I do not go fast. Don't sweat much, but it does get my heart rate up.
