Starting last May, I had my first round of kidney stones with an infection in my kidneys as well. Both the infection and the stones recurred within a few weeks. Following round #2, I passed the remainder of a blood clot that had once been the size of a quarter(3D). I consistently had gross hematuria and severe frequency following this, although my urine was free of bacteria. To rule out anything serious, my urologist performed a cystoscopy to investigate the state of my bladder and kidneys. At this point my kidneys appeared to be in good shape and there were no stones or other abnormalities found on the CT. Within a month or so the hematuria subsided and within another two, so did the frequency. Monday, on my 21st birthday I went for a follow-up thinking that I was done with all the problems with my kidneys but my urine test revealed that there was a lot of protein present. My urologist asked if I had been working out a lot lately, but I have not had the time to do this since I started the new semester at the beginning of January. They performed an ultrasound on my kidneys and my kidneys weren't swollen but from the ultrasound they were able to tell that I had at least one stone on each side. Because it was an ultrasound they couldn't say exactly how many but I was told that there were multiples but they were probably on the small side. However, my urologist also believes that the stones are unrelated to the protein found in my urine. He ordered a 24-hour collection to see how much protein I'm really losing. I'm 21 years old and otherwise in good health, and concerned with what all of this could mean(kidney disease, etc). I have no family history of kidney disease, although I recently found out that my maternal grandfather had one round of kidney stones. I know I need to wait and see what the 24-hour test says, but any other more simple causes of the urine protein? Also, with no substansial family history, why do these stones keep coming back? Anyone have a similar experience? Any help is appreciated.
