Hi Everyone,
I am a 16 year old Female. For the last 6-10 months I have noticed significant hairloss  . I have been on Asthma and Allergy medications for years and never noticed any hairloss until recently. I ever since I was a small child have had extremely thick hair. My hair is sometimes Frizzy so a few months ago I started experimenting and using various shampoos to treat my oily roots and dry/frizzy ends. So I tried all kinds of Shampoos in the last year from Treseme, Pantene, Aussie, Loreal, to Dove.
I have been using Dove for the last 2 months. Anyway, a few months ago I started on medication to treat my weightloss and a new diet much healthier than my prior eating. My Doctor prescribed the medicine to me and I asked him about a month ago about my hairloss. My Mother brang something to his attention that I thought was simply not the cause of my hairloss and that is the fact that I for the past year or year and a half have wore my hair up in a pony tail EVERYDAY. I just threw my hair in a pony tail because I was simply too lazy or too busy to fix my hair (My hair can really be hard to fix/style at times) So my Mom asked my Doctor if this was the cause for my Hairloss, and he ran a test on my thyroid to see if this was the problem and the tests came back negative. So he said that it was probably due to me wearing my hair up everyday for over a year and that the hairloss is probably due to the follicles being smothered and dying.
I trust what my doctor tells me, his knowledge seems like it is infinite ;)
but I wanted to post and ask if anyone has had this problem or heard of this problem before? And if so does leaving the hair down or not using Hair ties to pull the hair up prevent the hairloss or help the growth? Can hairties/scrunchies be subsituted for like hairclips if I don't clip them directly on my head?
and finally does massaging the scalp improve hair growth or irritate it?
Thanks so much for any information in advance and G-d bless

You might want to have your iron and hormones levels checked. Low iron and hormone imbalances can cause hair loss. I losted a good amount of hair from changing birth control and it sent my hormones out of wack. Can i ask also, does your scalp feel sentive when you wear it up? When i was going thru the hair loss(TE) my scalp was always hurting especially when i would pull it back into a headband or ponytail. The hair shed has slowed down since i quit BC and it's very slowely growing back. Massaging your scalp does help with hair growth and also you might want to take a good multi. vitiam and also eat well. Good luck and let us know on how things work out for you.

Wheat grass juice has stopped my hairloss. It fell out by the handful from my early twenties to now. Two weeks ago I started taking wheatgrass juice freeze dried capsules and it has literally gone from about 150 hairs falling out in the shower to about 20 since taking the capsules. I recently learned about putting it directly on the scalp, too. This seems to make it even stronger and nothing but 4 or 5 hairs falls out during the day when I comb. An Australian doctor uses an extract cream in his practice for many illnesses. He has a case history of a 28 yr old woman with Alopecia areata who fully recovered in 4 months.{REMOVED} I take Advantage Health Matters Sun Grown wheat grass juice capsules and I also mix one in a tablespoon of water and apply to my scalp with an eye dropper every night. It is a God given gift that has eased my pain and turned a new leaf for me. The painful tenderness and dandruff are gone, too.

I am with you. I am 25 had beautiful hair and started lossing it. I am female by the way which is devastating. What is the pattern of your hairloss? Does it fall out all over your head? Are there bald spots? Does it fall out from the front? What does the hair look like when it falls out? Is there junk on the root of the hair? I don't totally feel comfortable with your doctor's opinion. Sure people's hair can fall out if the hair is pulled to hard many times (happens to women who wear their hair in cornrows and tight tight braids.) However, just a pony tail wouldn't do it. If you went to your doctor as a teen with hairloss and all he tested was your thyroid you should run and get yourself another doctor. He should test you for other things and especially vitamin deficiencies! Do you have bad allergies? I do too. He should check and make sure you do not have psorisis on your scalp. There must be more investigation into this! Until this gets resolved you can use a volumizing shampoo. If things get bad enough you can always find someone who puts in hair extensions. I got them in the back just to put more volume into my pony tail. Nowadays there are pretty good beauty remidies! Good luck. Also flaxseed oil helps with skin and scalp health. It's omega 3 like fish oil.

Allena, Are you taking any acne meds? Any street drugs?
Do you notice any kind of irritation on your scalp? Itch?
If I were you I wouldn't add any treatments (Minoxidil) until you rule out the possible causes one at a time.

Massaging hair helps alot. Get one of those wet hair comes and massage... It works and feels great! Brushing when your hair is wet is bad. Pony tails could maybe have a little bit of the problem. Stress?

I have a thyroid disorder and started having significant hair loss about 4 yrs ago. I was CERTAIN it was from my thyroid- very logical explanation, right? Turns out it's my birth control. I'm on Depo so I get a shot every 3 mths. I notice the hair loss happens right after I get my shot then eases off. Point being that as a teen your hormones fluctuate quite a bit. I would see about getting your levels looked at. Start keeping a log as much as possible if you notice any changes- such as more hair loss before, during or after your cycle. And just as important is to keep up with NO change- hair loss is constant and doesn't change.
Good luck!
Good luck!

O wow! It sounds like my problem...started birth control pills 3 weeks ago...last week my scalp became very sensitive (even to the touch)and my hair is falling out...it's really strange but I can feel it when a hair falls out! I know I am making it worse by worrying but how can you not worry about hair loss especially when you're a female! I also lost a lot of hair after giving birth and there is a history of female hair loss in my family. Don't know if I should continue to take the pills and hope my hormone levels even out or discontinue taking them. My gyno said to stop taking them if I wanted to but the decision is up to me...what do you think...did it happen when you were on the bc pills or only after you stopped taking them? It's freaking me out!

Ive been losing hair over the last few months just had blood tests to rule out thyroid, hormones etc, my doctor thinks its because my iron is deficient, its the lowest I have ever had.
