I've had a black spot under my toenail for some time. Trimming and filing the nail has not removed it. Now it has grown into a vertical line. It doesn't appear to be fungus. I have no idea what it is or how to get rid of it. I can't afford to go to a podiatrist. Can anyone help?

If you have injured your nail, it will turn black because the nail bed has died there. It will just have to grow out.

A thin, black verticl line in the nailplate is called a splinter hemorraghe. It occurs if there has been trauma to the nail plate/bed, or if there are any voids between the nail plate cells as they are produced in the nail root. The area will fill up with blood from the nail bed and end up looking like you have a splinter up in there. Either way, it will grow forward with the nail plate until it grows off the free edge. Remember, toenails grow MUCH slower than fingernails, so give it some time.

Many thanks to MommaBee and Marti! :) You've given me piece of mind.
