Hello, I just was wondering if anyone has headaches/suffered for this long???????????? (due to several medications not working) It is so hard when you want to live your life, and you are tired of taking/fighting pain for so long. I have good days :bouncing: but it seems it's just not enough any more. I am allergic to many meds. migraine family, vicodin, darvocet, many!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I also have systemic mastocytosis (a mast cell disease) That is another story that if any one is interested I can explain it a little more. Any opinion/advice would be appreciated :)
take care, summerbreeze

What kind of doctor are you seeing for your *migraines*?
My migraines started 1996.
I suffer from 2 completely different kinds of migraines which must be treated differently: Occipital :dizzy: & Hormonal :bouncing:
Took 6 years to find the correct Migraine Management Programe. What a balancing act let me tell you!!!

Thanks for the reply, and I (early on when headaches started) I seen and ent. Doctor, rheumatologist (who dx me with fibromyalgia) those meds. early on were aspirin, ibupfofen, tylenol. Then when the headaches continued I seen a neurologist who prescribed different types of migraine meds. I thought at that point I would get relief, but no such luck  Infact I had a severe reaction to one of the migraine meds; my chest hurt, felt like I couldn't move, and worst of all the pain was still there.
Recently dx. with systemic mastocytosis (bone marrow produces too many mast cells) I guess I am at a crossroad right now. My SM is very rare, and many Doctors don't know that much about it. I am wanting to try massage therapy or maybe see a chiropractor; I have had MRI's etc. so it's very frustrating (all reports came back normal) but the pain still exists. I don't want to keep taking pills. I try to work out and eat well, but so many days I have to just ride through the pain.
I was told recently that my estrogen levels were low, and my endocrinologist wanted to put me on premarin (I am still trying to decide if I want to go that route) I was 28 (now 45) when my headaches started; I also found out I have a thyroid disorder so I will talk to my Doctor at next appt. and see what he suggest about the chronic daily headaches.
I have read where sometimes you can have arthritis of the jaw joint which can also cause headaches
again thanks for the reply, and I hope your headaches are under control!!
Take care

Sounds more like rebound headaches rather than migraines. If this is the case, you will need to weaned off of the over the counter asprins. This may take a few weeks. Depends on how long you were taking the asprins.
Asprins are the leading cause of rebound headaches a/k/a chronic daily headaches.
I had to be weaned off of asprins because of rebound headaches. I have been headache free now for 3 years.
Still have migraines though.
Due to all your medical problems you are caught between a rock & a hard place when it comes to taking medications to treat each medical problem.
Does your Neurologist know about each medical problem you have, know about all the prescribed medications you are taking including the over the counter ones?
Is your Neurologist a headache/migraine specialist?
Yes, my migraines are under control & have been for 3 years now thanks to a wonderful Neurologist & of course the drugs!!! :D
Good luck!!!!

Im going to be 20 next month and I have had migraines since I was 10. Been to all sorts of doctors, tried all types of different medicines in different forms, different doses, different mixes. Missed school so much that I had to drop out, ect. Its good to know that other people understand the pain, its not good to know that you have had migraines for 12 years but it is good to know that Im not alone in this. Hopefully one day I will find the cause/cure for all of this. Same to you.

I have had migraines/headaches since I was a kid (now 28). I also agree with one of the other posters that itis very likely that yours could be rebound headaches rather than constant migraines. I have found that the rebounds really can be almost just as bad as the real headahces so to speak. you probably do need to be weaned off of the meds. I have been told that any fast acting mediation an cause rebouds including cold medications.
I was not able to determine that I was getting migraine headaches from hormones until the last couple years. I finally figued out that I was getting migraines whenever I ovulated (for a week) and during the monthly time (for a whole week) so I was getting migraines for at least 2 weeks strait out of the month. I decided to be put on birth control just to regulate my hormones and it has worked quite well. If your estrogen level is changing with your age it is very likely that yours could be hormonal too and you may be able to benifit from hormone therapy of some sort.
good luck & best wishes,
Amanda

Hormones can play a role in headaches. Perhaps you should have your thyroid levels checked and check your estogen, testosterone and progesterone levels. I take synthetic thyroid (for underactive thyroid) and recently went on bio-identical estradiol and progesterone. I haven't had a headache for 2 weeks and am generally feeling so much better. I would advise against premarin. Go with a doctor who is up on bio-identical hormones. You might also want to consider some massage therapy in your shoulders and neck. Good luck to you.

How are you treating your hormonal migraines? I think I'm figuring out hormones are part of my problem. Thanks for your input.

scf71, my Neurologist has me on a Migraine Management Programe as a suffer from 2 different kinds of migraines.
Topamax 50mgs - daily (recently reduced)
Baby Asprin 81mg - daily
Vit B2 400mg - daily
Zomig Nasal Spray 5mg - as needed
Phenergan - as needed
Breyers Vanilla Ice Cream (see below) :D
I have been on the above program for 3 1/2 years.
PS: There are other "home methods" that I do that work just as well as meds.
I use an old fashion ice bag (w/the plastic cap), the kind that uses ice cubes& place it on top of my head.
Breyers vanilla ice cream. Eat the ice cream when the migraine first comes knocking. Otherwise, it will not work. Must be the Breyers (vanilla) black dots.

how often were your rebound headaches and how often do you get migraines now that you're over the rebound headaches? I've recently been diagnosed with rebound headaches that are also migraine related.

If your questions were directed at me:
I use to suffer from daily rebound headaches. Sometimes, I would get a day or two reprieve.
Since I've been on the Migraine Management Programe my migraines have lessen in frequency from 3 times a week lasting 48 hours to approximately 3-5 times a month lasting for a few hours up to 24 hours. Depending on the weather & season (sometimes what I eat :D ).
My migraine *attacks* which can last for up to 1 week have gone from once a week to 2 to 3 times a year!!!! A SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT!!!!!
Unknown what triggers those *attacks*.

I have MS too. I have been told that migraines are one of the possible symptoms and are sometimes managed with H3 blockers. Sounds like you’ve tried quite a few things so perhaps this has already been attempted but there are new solutions frequently, don’t give up!

Have you tried taking amitriptyline, it may help reduce the frequency and severity of attacks.
In Australia, 1000mg buffered aspirin with 10mg metoclopramide is commonly used for migraine, and gives results roughly equal to the triptain family.
It may be worth trying.

I have had chronic daily headaches, 24/7, since I was 10 yrs. old. Today I turned 48. So I've been SUFFERING for 38 years! I've been to every kind of Doctor, Dentist, Oral Surgeon, Neurologist, Chiropractor, Pain Management docs, Internal medicine docs, you name it, I've been there. I've tried all kinds of med's with no relief. Some days if it weren't for my friends and families support, I think I would just end it all! I recently went to a Neurologist who is trying me on Lyrica 50mg twice a day. Working up to 100mg three times a day. It is a med specifically for nerve pain. Not your average pain killer. Believe it or not, I'm going on my second week and my headache seems to be feeling different. Not as bad, still there, but not as bad. I'm hoping that when I increase the Lyrica to 300mg a day that it will help. I have a good feeling about this medication. Cross my fingers!!! Maybe you could suggest it to your Neurologist? Anyway, good luck and keep us informed of your process.;)

15 years for me
Never knew what was causing them until today..i had an MRI done yesterday..i have a hernaited disc in my neck. I dont think that could of caused all the headaches though. for 15 years? i would think some more symtpoms would of shown up. who knows exatly how long my neck has been like this though.
They are not really classified as headaches...more like a pinched nerve in my head. actually its like a non stop constant brain freeze. i cannot describe the amount of pain that i am in sometimes. Hopefully the neurosurgeon will end my misery.
My dr was guessing about a year ago and put me on Lyrica which has helped tremendously but didnt completely get rid of them. Its been a long road and im finally getting to the end. and getting the answers im looking for

hi im melissa. im 16 yrs old. I HAD a headache everyday for 2 years. I dont kno if your having one everyday all day, but i was looking online and found out about HC(hemicrania Continua) so i talked to my doctor and she prescribed a trial of Indocin, 3 times a day. It has cleared my headaches, and now im on it full time. If i miss a does then my headache starts to come back, but it works great. If you havent already tried this, then i suggest it.
