I keep getting a weird smell, a bit like burning inside my head, has anyone else experienced this. I was diagnosed relaping remitting MS twelve months ago and the symptoms I am now suffering are really getting me down. It alters by the day, sometimes stabbing pains in my legs and arms, very dizzy and feel like my brain is floating, have difficulty understanding things, balance is like I have drunk a bottle of whisky and my eyesight is rubbish, double vision and sometimes loose it completely in one eye. Sorry to moan but feeling really rubbish at the moment. Has anyone any suggestions.

Hi.
I've experienced something similar. I'm not dxd, but I'm getting symptoms which I feel are those of MS.
Sometimes I get a 'smell' that's like pine burning; other times I get something similar to lemon cream cleanser and vanilla. The burning one is quite annoying as I don't feel I can trust my senses anymore.
I've had a brain MRI and the neuro says that 'it's as clean as a whistle', but that doesn't stop these symptoms, does it? My top palate, gum and lip are numb as well. Do you get these symptoms? I suppose it's to do with damage to the facial nerve.
Sorry to hear that you're not feeling so good. Maybe tomorrow will be better? Hope so.

Unusual smells "inside your head" are a neurological anomoly, often associated with a migraine event- sometimes classic migraines, sometimes painless migraines. You should inform your neuro.

WOW!!!
I get the sense that something is burning(we burn fire places in the winter),but its not that type of smell.I thought it was linked to being perinoid since we had a terrible ecectrical fire during the night 3 years ago and escaped with just are jammys on.My husband blamed it on my ciggarette smoking. He said my ability to smell is gone. But he is a good one to talk.He couldn't small anything if I paid him to.Oh I'm showing him this.He hasn't quite gripped the fact that MS can cause such an up roar within the central nervous system. Thanks for the enlitening news.My nasal passages are not gone.
Prayers to all

Thanks for the sympathy but I noticed from your reply you have not been dxd yet. Although your MRI was clear ask them to carry out a lumber puncture to confirm dx. My MRI was also clear 18 months ago and MS was dismissed, then because the symptoms persisted they carried out a LP and the dxd was made. I have now had further MRI scans and now have 4 lesions so the condition is getting worse. I have to have another 2 MRI's later this month to see if it is progressing. Keep nagging them if the symptoms persist. Good luck.

I get the weird smell thing going on too. BUt my smell actually smells like PINE... dont ask me why but it nauseates me and I usually end up having a migrain a couple hours later.
I also wanted to ask a different question while I am posting here..I went to my ear doctors yesterday. I wear a hearing aide on my right ear due to a condition which i was born with. Well to make matters worse, I had a retest of my hearing and now my left ear has gotten very bad. I had to be fitted for a hearing aide on my left ear now as well as my right ear. I am wondering if maybe the deterioration of my hearing in my other ear may have something to do with ms. The ear doctor says its possible. Ms triggers nerves on people whether it be their eyes or legs or arms.. Maybe my ms is triggering my ears. GOd only knows. Anyone have any similiar problems like this going on??
Take care.

wow....so glad to hear I am not the only one with a strange smell in my head. I really thought I was going nuts. I have had MRI's and several other tests, the nuero doc said sometimes it's the sign of a tumor but no tumor he basically just shrugged me off back to the family doc who has not clue. I also suffer from Tinnitus and balance issues. Not sure if they are connected but I go back to the ENT in two weeks and will discuss that with him then. But the smell isn't always there and it burns my nose and eyes. I use a vicks nasal spray to camo the odor at times but it comes right back. Anyone found anything that stops the smell please post it.. this is terrible..

Hey DeeDee, welcome!
The post you're referring to is quite old. Some of the respondents may not still be around.
"Phantom Smells" as they are sometimes referred to as, can affect those of us diagnosed with MS, or others with neurological conditions (as examples).
I too experience phantom smells (mine being smoke) and it can raise my anxiety levels and is quite annoying/scary.
I'd recommend making a new thread to introduce yourself to the crew here. Some may pass by this thread seeing the original post was in 2006 :).
Best!

Thanks Nenu, it wasn't until after I posted this thread that I realized the age of it... I was just somewhat thrilled to find folks talking about this strange smell, At first I thought I was crazy but I see I am not alone. Thanks for the info.
