This happened to me back in mid/late 80's while diagnosed as 'dysthymic/bipolar' or whatever, apparently a misdiagnosis (or only partially correct).
It is amazing how many shrinks didn't know about this possible side effect (but many dermatologists do). It was really bad, large sores all over my back. The first dermatologist I was referred to for this wouldn't prescrible Tetracycline, but only Eurethromycin which was all but completely ineffective.
A new derm. prescribed Tetracycline and it worked great but you really have to have your schedule down pat, esp. if you drink milk: No dairy products within 3 hrs before or 2 hrs after the Tetracycline; cannot take Lithium and Tetracycline within 2 hours of each other; take Tetracycline 3x/day, Lithium 2x/day; cannot eat ANYTHING within 1 hr. of Tetracycline.
No wonder the first one only gave Eurethromycin, he didn't trust me with the interactions!
Maybe these days with the Depakote form of L. this side effect is no longer a problem?
