before blood drawn tomorrow? My doc's says to fast before blood draw for ALT/AST and that includes no coffee :nono: . My hubby's dr. says coffee is ok. We're trying to figure out if we should set up the coffee tonight. Both of us take it no cream or sugar...black. What do you think?

I have my cholesterol checked every 4 months -- this also includes a blood test for ALT (since I am on a statin drug). My Dr. says 14 hr. fast, but black coffee OK - nothing nutritional in it (like cream and sug). I guess there are two schools of thought on this. My lab doesn't open until 9:00 a.m. and a little black coffee in the a.m. of a test sure helps hold me over until I can eat.

I am also interested in imput from others.

Anytime I've ever had bloodwork for the past 15 years, they always ask me "Did you eat or drink anything." I asked one time and they said only minimal water is allowed. I suppose it depends on who's drawing your blood and what they feel like saying that day--some probably think coffee would be ok.

In all the ALT and AST labs I've had done, prior to and even during time on the liver transplant list, I've never had to fast ahead of time for any type of LFT lab. For cholesterol testing, yes, liver labs, never. Is it possible that your dr is also checking other things beside ALT and AST? Good luck w/your tests!! Gina

LOL! I figured this one out fast :bouncing: I got up early this morning when the lab opened and told her my story with the Dr.'s different opinions. The first lab said, "no, no coffee". Well, then still unsatisfied, I called my lab's "sister" lab and they said I could have coffee as long as no sugar or cream. :bouncing: The tests needed were for liver, cholesterol, and estrogen of many. So, I'm guessing the cholesterol was the big one for fasting.
