Hi all,
I broke and dislocated my hip about 3 yeas ago, and now I'm 25 and have hip ARTHRITIS. i used to be along distance runner, so this is very emotinally trying for me. I am naturally a very, very active person, I walk a bike all over the place, adn used to run 5-9 miles a day, but cannot, unfortuantly anymore.
I'm worried, because over the past few moths the arthritis has gotten ALLOT worse. I'm not sure why, though. I'm scared because, I don;t want a hip replacement and I 'm worried that I'll have to get one sooner instead of later. What is this like? Will it ruin any chance of doing types of rigourus phsyical activity? I feel so old, I can't walk too long withot aching all night and the next day- I used to run races all the time! I'm soory, I'm just starting to understad how much this really has effected me.
My hip grinds with every step, i can feel it making grating noses!
What is that?
so, I 'm worried becasue my other hip is now aching all the time-
it must have been overcompensating, but now they both ache EVERY moring badly!
I have to lie in bed for awhile, adn take a hot shower, I can't sit still for too long cause it hrts! what is happening?
i feel like i'm falling apart!
also, I am getting very out of shape, which is realy weird for me, and painful....
what are some cardio exercises you can do if you have bad hips?
please help with any advice! i feel like my body is falling apart, and i have sooo much energy left!
i'm scared!

wow - you sounded just like me. If you read my previous posts, you can know how frustrating I was going through for the past 6 months.

The reason why people don't respond to your post is because they either haven't been through this position before or that they had responded to other people's post similar to yours.

To keep this succinct as possible:
1. hip replacement - surgeons don't recommend such procedure at such a young age because the new hip lasts approx 10 years +. and you might need another operation.

2. Go to the hip/knee replacement section of this board.

3. Bear in mind that if you do have such operation, there are restrictions you can't do like folding your legs. Some patients may take 6-12 weeks to recover. Do research and listen to other people's experiences.

----------------------------------------------------------

My experience: hot shower helps, and plenty of rest. I had to quit my job - previously i couldn't run, bend and having trouble getting in and out of the car. It took approx six months for the pain to slowly subside, even though there is still pain in my hips but compare to the start it was unbearable and depressing.

-----------------------------------------

Grating noises could be the result of narrowing of the joint spaces as depicted in your x-rays. Cartilages wears out.

They say hydrotherapy helps strengthen your muscles. I couldn't seem to keep up with such exercise like that because i constantly having those "shooting" pain in my hips - shooting pain that makes my leg fly in the sky.

Hi Mochi,
Yes people do care. for someone to leave a comment for you they first have to experience what you are going through to be able to help. I can only respond to your despair as my form of arthritis is different to yours. You firstly should be really happy that you have been able to be as active as you have been to your age. Some people are small children that live with crippling arthritis and never get to experience the joy of running.
I do understand what you are feeling because i went through being so active walking everywhere running with my kids playing with them to needing someone to help me put my shoes on do my hair etc. I have learnt that there are things that I can no longer do but there are still alot i can and lots of new ones that I have found too. I really do recommend swimming and even water polo if you need to be competitive. Gentle walking exercise till you feel the stiffness go and Tai Chi also can help.
I agree with Jimmy that a hip replacement at your age is too soon but it also depends on how bad your hip has degenerated. Your specialist is the only one that can tell you that. You didnt mention if you have had any formal diagnosis or if you are on any kind of medication. We aren't specialist here we are just people living with many different forms of arthritis. I would suggest that maybe you not worry so much till you have seen your specialist because sometimes the body does strange things to us.
I wish you luck
Olivia

i h=just went fron being sooo busy and active to being arthritic so young....

even sex can be difficult, this sounds funy, but at 25, i feel like i am fallig abprt and old and am soo young, and i had endurance like no one,

i just donlt know what to do with my energy any more, my body cabn;t keep up.......

i know what you are going through - i am 29 yr old, AND single. I never thought much about hips until now, when my doctor told me that i have erosive arthritis in both my hip joints. I don't understand how this happen. But I blame it on carry too many heavy objects and not eating properly, and not taking care of my health.

i've tried glucosamine - for the last six months - but i couldn't see any difference. Glucosamine is shown to help with the knee i am not sure whether it helps with the hips. Regardless of the results, i still take it religiously in the hope that it will cure my condition.

Physiotheraphy - honestly when you are in that much pain - physio only make it worster. The only relief i found to be is TIME. It does take time for the pain to slowly decreases.

Have you tried massage and putting ointment in to the painful area ? An electronic massager costs only $50AUD can do the trick.

Supplements like Calcium and Vitamin D helps to prevent bone loss, and Vitamin B to prevent muscle cramps/spasms that you may develop eventually.
