Has anyone ever had a reaction to advil? I sprained my shoulder about 5 weeks ago and then hurt it again, I am supposed to take advil for 10 days but I find that it causes me breathing problems, I do have some breathing problems at times due to lung injury 6 years ago but this new thing happens a few hours after taking advil, I tried it four differnt times and same reaction so am not going to take it but meanwhile, "oh the pain". Would appreciate to know if anyone else has noticed anything while taking advil.

It's possible. What pain reliever do you normally use? Aleve, Tylenol, whatever should give you some relief. Advil and Motrin make me nauseous. I use Aleve for most body aches and Tylenol for headaches....

Also, because of my asthma, I have been told over the years to try NOT to take advil (or ibruprofen) or aspirin, as sometimes these medications make asthma and perhaps allergies worse. More recently, I read from a book (I think it's fairly decent, too) that one with asthma should also not take anything with napraxon, either. Basically, you're left with tylenol/acetopminiphin - which has gotten me through surgery and everything over the years. My breathing gets messed up when I take advil, I know for sure, but I don't know about aspirin, as I've rarely ever taken it - and definitely not recently.

There is an aspirin induced asthma but not everyone with asthma will have a reaction to aspirin...it's specific condition of its own....like exercise induced asthma. I've taken Aleve for YEARS and never had a problem...even back when it was script only as Anaprox. I don't take aspirin because it makes me belch. I've also had allergies all my life - three times around on the injections - and none of my physicians ever said anything about avoiding aspirin or ibuprofen as a result. You sometimes have to take what oyu read with a grain of salt.

Hi PeggySusan and all,
Yes advil and aspirin definately does cause breathing problems with people with asthma and so has potential to cause breathing problems in anyone. It is well known very much in the uk and because I have asthma my drs don't tend to offer it to me, even after surgery.

Your options are tylenol/acetopminiphin/paracetamol which shouldn't have any effect on you.
Hope that helps
Best wishes

Yes, there have been studies, and even a young allergist recently mentioned the advil thing to me (besides, advil gives me severe heartburn within two days of taking it). The info I found in the book is very good (about napraxon - I am a librarian - and I have started checking some of the sources. Hmm - maybe a medline search.
