My big toe nail has been acting wierdly for a couple years now. A test 2 years ago couldn't confirm whether there was an infection. It started out by growing at an angle and outward, away from the now. Now, it has begun to curve inward at the top quite a bit. I'm not in any pain and I'm trying to keep it under control. I know you're not supposed to cut it too far down, but I'm wondering if I should cut it below where it curves. It's just the strangest thing. I know my dad (who is passed away) went to a podiatrist regularly for ingrown toenails, but this is definitely not what I ever considered ingrown to be. Any ideas? Any help? :(

Did you injure you toe at some point? A damage nail bed can heal wrong and cause this. I would cut your nail straight across and only cut the curve only if it gets too bothersome, and not close to your skin. Anytime you cut your toenail too short or with a curve, instead of straight, do you get ingrown toenails. I would just keep it clean and keep an eye on it.

As far as I know, I've never injured my toe and it's only been doing this curved thing for a few months now. It looks positively bizzarre!

You could be developing 'pincer' nails. Cut the nails straight across - then, tip your nail cutters at a 45 degree angle and cut away the deepest portion of the curve at the forward edge. Do not cut then rounded, but cut away only the sharp corner at either side. Soak your feet in very warm water to which you have added 1/4 cup of either table salt or sea salt. The water should be fairly salty and as warm as a jacussi. (hope I spelled that right)
After soaking is when you should cut them, not before, as clipping dry nails can cause the nail pale to separate and peel. After the nails are nice and soft and after you have cut and filed them, you can file away asmuch of hte curved portion as possilbe with an ingrown toenail file. Then, push a tiny bit of cotton into the area to help force the nail plate upward.
