I never wanted to take medication, even though my cholesterol was 274. Diet and exercise didn't do much at all. But after 3 months of doing the following, it was down to 204!! Here was my strategy:
1. Morning: Fish Oil pill, Garlic pill, 1000 mg Arginine
2. Early Afternoon: 1000 mg Arginine
3. Late Afternoon: Fish Oil pill, garlic pill
4. Evening: 1000 mg Arginine
The fish oil and garlic needs to be taken with food; the arginine needs to be taken on an empty stomach so food doesn't interfere with its absorption.

Goliszek,
If you lowered it that much through just taking those supplements then I would continue as well.
I actually lowered mine from 275 to 209 at one point through diet BUT, from a personal standpoint my diet was rather bland to say the least.
I just don't want to live that way.
But if you can do this through the supplements with very little diet change then I would continue.

I applaud your results. I am curious why you are taking so much Arginine. You are taking 3,000 mg per day. Did you arrive at that figure from a recommendation or on your own? My bottle says to take 500mg per day as a supplement. I have been a little scared of this supplement since a study on it was abandoned after people with prior heart attacks started dropping dead while on it.

Based on many scientific articles concluding that 3-6 grams of Arginine per day is required to notice results (I am a college Anatomy and Physiology professor and read up on everything before I use it). The danger occurs when people such as bodybuilders abuse it and take as much as 15 to 20 grams per day. Also, it's best to take the arginine in doses spread out over the day and not take it all at once. I suspect that users who've had problems took too much and took it all at once. Hope this helps. Good luck.

The people doing the study theorized that the relaxing effect of arginine on people with hardened arteries may have been too great and caused the problem. Jane

I am very happy for your 70 point reduction but I am a little nervous about taking so much arginine. There only seems to be a problem taking it if you already have hardening of the arteries. But don't we all have some build up at 56? Any advice?

I'm a great believer there is a better way then those meds. Of course I will probably hear from who ever the "drug rep" is that I see on alot of replies but my husband has been almost crippled on statins, tried a new one & suffered so bad w/gerd. You can't tell me that's good. I'm gonna give him fish oil/garlic & arginine since the Dr told him to stop the med because of his bad gerd. It's hard for him to take it all different times of the day since he works & I know won't stop to do that. Any certain kind of fish oils? I know herbs work since I have done it for yrs, in my 60's & on no meds & everything cks out fine!

Make sure your husband consults with his doctor BEFORE he takes anything. Don't take anyone's advice with your health. Fish oil, garlic and arginine happens to work great for me, but it may not be appropriate for someone else who may have an existing medical condition. I happen to be a very healthy individual (I exercise every day, eat well, and have no medical problems at all). Check with your physician before taking supplements.
