I was sent to a hematologist for a consultation after having several low WBCs. They ranged from 1.8 to 2.6 although my latest WBC was 3.6. The hematologist is giving a preliminary diagnosis of either Cyclic or Idiopathic Neutropenia. He did not perform a bone marrow biopsy.
Could someone please explain a little bit more about Neutropenia and the different types of this disorder. i.e. what is the difference between Cyclic and Idiopathich Neutropenia? What is the break down between mild, moderate and severe?
Thank you,
Weedle

hi there...I too have neutropenia. Although I am not sure what type it is. All I know is I've had low WBC for the past 7 years or so. Could have been longer but we never really discovered it until 7 years ago. I just wanted to see how it affects you. Me, I'm hardly ever sick and when I do get sick it's not that bad. The doctors freak me out saying that if I get sick my body will work so much harder to fight it, etc, could require hospitalization....none of that has ever happened to me. In fact, I consider myself quite healthy! I'm 33 by the way and work at a preschool! Around sick kids all the time and like I said, it hardly bothers me. :-) What has your experience been?

I used to take care of small children, and yes I got sick, but only a couple times was I really wiped out with the flu. I'm almost 50 so I get sicker now than I used too.
I've had burning urination, Molluscum Contagiosum, and during a couple days of each month I drag around because I am so tired........the rest of the month I zip around like normal. I thought everyone did this, but I guess not.
Over Christmas I caught a nasty flu bug where I ran a 103 degree fever, or thereabouts, and my WBC dropped to 1.8. I've slowly recovered but after that bout my family doctor sent me to a hematologist for an evaluation.

Hi--I too have Neutropenia--all my WBC are normal count but the neutrophils...I rarely get sick. I have tired days but anyone with 4 kids would. Funny thing is..I have normal neutrophils when pregnant.
