Hi, my daughter is having nausea, tons of throbbing, stabbing pain in the right, top quantrant, she is not overweight, has a high tolerance for pain due to prior intestinal surgeries, has never had a liver problem, has yellow in the whites of her eyes, i had some blood work done and she does not have hepititas and the blood work is as follows. She is 17, her pediatrician doesn't seem concerned but I am. The following is the abnormal stuff on her bloodwork. She hasn't had a full liver panel done, just a basic healthfair thing.
Normal TSH.
LYM- 25.0 LOW Ref 30-40
T Billi 3.0 HIGH ref .2-1.1
D Bili .5 HIGH ref .0-.2
GGTP 7 LOW ref 9-64
LDH 105 LOW ref 140-271
Cholesterol 100 LOW ref 136-199
Magnesium 1.7 LOW ref 1.9-2.7
Thank you for all who respond, i know she needs more testing and she is in a ton of pain. ALso her stools are very light in color, and she gets an occasional rash on her arms. She is about ready to start her high school soccer season and i'm so worried she will collapse on the field. She pushes herself so hard. And she does not drink alcohol and is not sexually active.

I suggest she go ahead and get her liver panel done. Yellowing of the eyes most of the time is jauntice, usually an indication of hepatitis. How is her energy level? My daughter (16) got mono this last year and had a lot of abdominal pain. The pediatrician said we had to be very careful about contact sports. Make sure you check out all the angles to get to the bottom of it. Can't help you with blood test results, just a mom.....

One thing I do know is that when stool is light it means there is not enough bile coming from the gallbladder. Also when bilirubin is high that means there is something going on with the liver. You didn't state what her previous intestinal surgeries were, but is she on any pain medication for it? Any type of medicine will mess with liver enzymes. I would call her pediatrician and get the full liver panel done too, especially since she's having pain. It's strange that her Dr isn't following through with a million tests since she's already had surgery. I'm just a mom too, but these are things I've read along my way. Let us know what happens :)

I'm with the other two posters on getting the liver panels done. Jaundice is not *always* indicative of hepatitis, but it is indicative that the liver is having a harder time removing the bile from the blood. (first the eyes turn, then the skin will turn yellow) High bili levels can itching.(does she itch-or is the rash itchy?) With her bili being high, and her stools being pale(another indication of high bili) her dr should run a set of LFT labs. If she's not feeling better and her dr won't run further test, I'd go to the ER--they'll take one look at her eyes and run the necessary LFTS-and help her w/the pain until they figure out what is going on. You know your daughter and regardless of what her dr says, if 'something isn't right', follow your instincts. Hang in there and let us know how she's doing.

No my daughter is not on any medication other than about 2 vicodin a month at the most for pain from adhesions. Her prior surgeries were at 10- meckels diverticulum with a meckels band, lost 3 feet of intestines, had her appendix out at the same time, then the other surgeries were from adhesions from the very first surgery. She is very athletic and just pushes past the pain. She has had pain for awhile but every time i take her in and they run thousands of test it never shows anything if its adhesions, it has been 3 years since her last surgery. She says this is not adhesion pain, totally different, she is not on any meds. I actually just went to a health fair for $30 and had the blood done to see if anything was wrong to avoid the doctor charge too. Then i had the bloodwork faxed to her pediatrician and he just doesn't seem worried. I took her last sun to a firstcare place and he said he thinks her liver is slightly enlarged and did a hepatitis test which came negative. I am trying to figure out what doctor to go to now that will run the right test, i'm afraid she is outgrowing her pediatrician. He said the low ggt and ldh is nothing to worry about, that i should only be worried if they were high along with the high biliruben. My daughter is so tired all the time and is having trouble finishing homework and just about everything, this is so unlike her, she is quite the go-getter. She is about to start her soccer season of training 4 hours a day, i don't know how she will do it. She had a mono test last year and it was negative. Thanks so much for all the replies. Cathy

Cathy; Bless her heart-been thru so much-and now this. I have abdominal adhesions too,and I can tell you, she knows the difference in the pain. It is different. With everything she's been thru--plus being in soccer training--she's one tough kid who rallies and pushes thru it.

High bili and yellowing of the eyes in NOT normal--and an indication of liver probs. My liver spec told me tiredness is normal and coomon w/liver issues... (my days are cut in half--if I don't get a nap I am drooling and stupid....) I'd get her to a gastroenterologist who specializes in the liver. (if she had a gastro from her other surgery and you like that dr, try and get her back there...) I love my GP--- but he had no idea my liver was failing--and I had been there many times w/diff symptoms. If he'd have put all my symptoms together he'd not have missed it--but he didn't, and I paid for it dearly. GPs and peds know a little bit abt a lot of stuff. An ER will run all the right tests--and they have to treat her. Did the ped know she had yellow eyes? What did he say abt that? How is she doing today? Hang in there-I know it feels like there is no light at the end of your tunnel--but there is--it's just not super bright right now. Gina

She did have a gastro from her other surgeries at childrens hospital in denver. I have not paid off the hospital from her last surgery and i was trying to avoid the 1000 deductible i will be charged, i was thinking if i could find a good liver doctor then he could run the tests, (my insurance covers blood work) then if they find something then go from there. I will look in the phone book for a gastro in our town tomorrow, i wish i knew of a good one. Thanks so much, goldendogs08@aol.com

Oh yeah--that deductible is a killer--and paying off the hosp takes time. My ins is $100 for ER visits. If your ins co has a website, they should list drs by specialty--and it will indicate of the gastro also specializes in the liver or hepatology. You can call the ER/hosp in your area and ask who is on staff there. When I got sick I was taken to the ER and their staff gastro also specialized in liver -she saved my life. When I woke up they immediately moved me to the transplant hosp-and I was under the care of that TX team. After I was home, I was to continue seeing them also--which I did(and do) but I decided to pay a visit to the original gastro too. I called the hosp-they gave me her name, and I found her offices.(my hubby couldn't remeber her name--after 2 straight days of being at my side w/no sleep, he's lucky he knew his own name!)
She had minimal office hrs tho--I went in and it was like a "second opinion" for me--she knew I was still seeing the TX team of drs, but she gladly saw me. (Also I wanted to Thank her for saving my life-and to show her my chldren, b/c she saved their lives too. ) I'm really sorry you and your daughter have to go thru this-I know it's tough. Let me know how you do!!

HI, well i got my daughters pediatrician to run a liver panel and a mono tests, billiruben still high and monocytes high but everything else ok. He also sent her to the hospital for a ultrasound. THis is what the report says.
INDICATION: RIGHT UPPER QUADRANT PAIN
FINDINGS: the liver is normal in size and echo pattern without evidence of focal masses or biliary dilation. the common duct measures .8 mm. There are no gallstones seen. Gallbladder wall appeared minimally thickened measuring 2.4 mm. It is felt this is probably related to incomplete distention of the gallbladder as the patient did eat this morning. In the upper pole of the right kidney there is an aproximately 7 mm rounded echogenic structure. This could represent a small angiomyolipoma. The pancreas is normal.
IMPRESSION: No evidence for gallstones. Gallbladder wall appeared slightly thicked. Possible small angiomyolipoma upper pole right kidney.

Again, my pediatrican doesn't seem concerned. My daughter is in a ton of pain and something is wrong!

I'm sorry--I don't know anything about that condition, but I wanted to say I hope you find out what's going on. I'd be hottailing it to another Dr.---to someone that will give her more attention. Have they done any ct scans or something more than just an ultrasound?

hi, she has just had the ultrasound but from my searching on the internet it sounds like she needs a cat scan next. Thanks, Cathy

Yep--A CT will show much more than an U/S but don't be alarmed if they want to do an MRI instead--sometimes they just cut to the chase and do that. Stay strong Mom.

Hi, i called a kidney doc today and he read everything and said that i should call the pediatrician that ordered the ultrasound, so i did and the pediatrician said he is not worried if my daughter has the aml on her kidney he said that lots of people have a piece of fat on their kidneys. I know something is wrong and he is full of crap, (sorry) if i had listened to several doctors before when they told me i was overreacting when i told them i knew my daughter had a obstruction and they sent me home twice from the er room, only to finally end up in surgery the next day and losing part of her small intestine, (this happened twice). Anyway i did alot of research and the aml become hemmorogic and do bleed internally and also they cause high biliruben. So he did not feel a ct scan was necessary. I'm so mad. I know she gets adhsesion on her intestines and she hasn't had surgery in like 3 years. I hardly ever take her to the doctor, so its not like i'm a hypacondriac, however you spell that (:, anyway i guess the next step is to make an appt with her gastro in denver. Thanks, Cathy

Yorkie-I'm so sorry. I was hoping you'd have better news--like , as weird as it sounds, a dx. When are these drs going to learn that we know our kids? Sounds like you're going to the right person--the one who confirmed your suspicions when the ER drs gave you a pat-on-the-head and told you to go one home... It is infuriaitng. If it were THEIR child....things would surely be different. (every dr worth his salt know adhesions and scar tissue don't showup on U/S or CT's) How's your daughter doing--Is she still in a lot of pain? Eyes still yellow? What does her pediatrician say abt that?? I just want you to know we're thinking abt you and will keep my fingers crossed for a dx soon, so she can get on the road to wellness. Let me know how it goes w/her gastro...Gina
