I know that they go hand in hand.

But what are the chances of a bacterial infection if my mucus discharge has always been thin and clear, or just a little thick and cloudy.

Also antihistimines don't help. Just dont know how to treat this sinus congestion. I've done everything. Nasal rinses, floodings help temporarily.

Going to an ENT and allergy specialist. Antibiotics are not working. Avalox, and amoxicillin makes no difference.

Allergies with mostly clear discharge? Any body have a persistant re-occuring bacterial sinus infection with no green-and/or yellow discharge, just clear, or sometimes alittle cloudy? I drink tons of water.

thanks, John

chances of it being a sinus infection with no green/yellow drainage are pretty slim but still possible. Sometimes if you are so congested that it will not come out you will just not see it etc. Antihistimines will help to dry you up even more but will not help to unclog you; they will also help if you have sneezing or runny eyes etc but not with decongesting you. If you are clogged up you should take soemthing that is a decongestant such as sudafed. It could be an allergy triggering this so you may need to be on something such as singulair or flonase to help with the allergies. I would definitely see a doctor such as your primary but at this point I don't know if an allergist is required.

feel better soon,
Amanda

this is actually my problem.. no Dr or even myself even suspected a sinus infection until a CT scan showed my cheek bone sinuses were really infected. have you had a CT scan? that would help explain a lot.

How are you dealing with your infection? I have been on 4 different kinds of antibiotics (Levaquin, Ketek, Ceftin and Omnicef) they haven’t been able to clear the left maxillary infection, the nasal congestion is driving me crazy.

Thank you.

Thanks for the replies.

I haven't had a CT scan yet. I just made an appointment with an allergy doctor. People say she's good. Ct scans are quite expensise I think, and I have no insurance. Perhaps an x-ray would suufice, but I would love to know what is actually happening with a CT scan.

I'm taking amoxicillin right now because I just had an abcessed tooth yanked, hoping that it may be the underlying cause.

I'm doing neti pot rinses, beerzoids upside down flooding infrequently, drinking tons of water, humidifier, grapeseded extract, sinuclear, H202 in ears, everything...probably too much stuff as usual...

Pseudoephedrine as a nasal decongestant seems to be the only thing that reduces congestion, but I hate the side effects. Only taken 2 days in a row. Does correspond to me feeling alittle better lately.

I actually fell like my body is starting to recover. I'm getting glimpses of 100% health here and there, and I dont taste the "sickness" as much. Head still feels heavy, and tired. Plus I'm taking fish oil, and garlic supps.

Thanks for the help. Just wish I could determine the main cause, although I am feeling a little better.

I actually took Omnicef... which I thought was helping me. Upon inital exam, drs saw nothing, even in an endoscopy. But a CT scan while on it showed infection in both my right and left cheekbone sinuses. I guess it was bad they didn't see anything because it meant nothing was draining. So my ENT put me on a prednisone burst, starting at 40 mg, tapering down over 2 weeks, and a 3 week course of Augmentin XR. He told me this was the strongest antibiotic out there, and had me taking the strongest dose. I'm off of it now and see him again in a week for another CT scan. If there's still infection, he thinks it means the infection is antibiotic resistant and says i'll need surgery. I sure hope not! My mom caught the same thing, athough Tequin helped her, she went through Ketek and Ceftin with no help as well. It seems to be a drug resistant bug. The toughest part about this infection, is I don't feel sick anymore. Just run down and tired a lot, but i've also had a lot in the past 2 months so it doesnt strike me as odd. So I don't know if I still have the infection or not anymore becuase I can't feel it. I'm surprised they haven't suggested surgery if you are on the fourth round. I was surprised they suggested it for me.. I thought you go through months and months or years before they suggest such a thing.

I had a chronic infection without yellow/green drainage, but I will admit mine was a cloudy/white mucus. Interestingly, the nasty green mucus came AFTER my sinus surgery. Since my ENT operated only on the lower sinuses, the infection in the uper sinuses was finally able to drain.
