 HI, I have a question. I was wondering if any of you have any tips to help keep you from binge eating. I allow myself sweets, so I dont go on binges because of restrictions. But on days when I have eaten pretty good all day, I still have the urge to binge. If it is in front of me and I am full, I will still stuff it down. I've tried portion control, low restrictions, and not eating after a certain time but it seems like when it comes to food, I just dont have the will power when it comes right down to it. Do any of you have any tips you might be willing to share with me?
Thanks/

hey, i had HUGE problems with binging that sound very similar to yours. i was also anorexic, which makes it somewhat different, but the root problem, that URGE no matter what you try to do to avoid it, seems the same with you and me

i have overcome them though and i don't get the urge really at all anymore. so you can do it too!!! first off, i'd recommend reading "Overcoming Binge Eating" by Dr. Christopher Fairburn (i think that's the author). it's very helpful and informative and even sets up a self-help program that you can try if you want. also, i'd really recommend therapy. your binging is tied to something deeper than food alone, and without therapy, you won't really be able to identify that cause and really confront the issue causing you to binge. so yeah, therapy's kind of a must.

in terms of ways to avoid binging, check out the response i wrote a few days ago to a girl suffering from binge eating (i'm too lazy to type it all again!!) It's titled, "binger," and i wrote a lot of the things that kept me from binging and helped me get over it. time is the biggest key - the longer you fight it out and succeed, the better you do, the less you have to fight and the more confidence you get. and eventually, you don't even have to fight anymore! the urges go away! but i won't lie, it's HARD at first and you've got fight yourself daily. good luck though, you can do this!!

Thank you for your reply. I do think that what you used to do and what I do does sound similar. Its been a few years now, but I used to struggle with anorexia and bulimia too, although Im not either of those now, I still have a huge problem with self control when it comes to food so then I end up binging. I think I might check out that book, it sounds good and helpful. I probably should check into therapy as well.....Ive thought about it before but I havent gotten the courage to go yet, maybe I will this summer. Thank you for your help. I'm glad that you were able to get over your binge eating. :)
