Hi friends, well I took your advice and went and had my cholesterol test and here are the results Total cholesterol 229, Triglycerides 149, HDL 60, LDL 139 and something labeled VLDL 30. What do you think?

I am taking One A Day Plus with policosanol, 3000mg of fish oil, 1000mg of no flush niacin, cinnamon, assortment of Vit's including at least 2000mg of Vit C. My diet is quite good. I am concerned with the triglycerides because diabetes may run in my family, grandmother had it and now my brother. Any opinions are welcome. :)

Your numbers look fine to me. As far as the triglycerides are concerned, the best advice I can offer you is to try to cut back more on carbohydrates and sugar, especially if you have a family history of diabetes. I know the feeling of having a family member who is diabetic, since my father has been diabetic for 40 years. So, I am especially cautious about consuming a lot of carbohydrates and sugar. I think that is a very good habit to get into. If you can control your intake of carbohydrates and get your triglycerides under 100, that would be excellent. In time, you should see an overall improvement in your other numbers as well, especially in respect to HDL, which tends to rise as triglycerides fall. This effect may not happen overnight, but over time it will. It just takes a little patience and self-discipline.

I think they look pretty darn good, congrats. I hear ya about the Trigs, mine last time were 146, so I am trying to be as aware as possible about the carbs. I'm not a sugar lover, but do tend to like my carbs. Your VLDL is your very low density level, and it's range I believe is 0-30, mine was 29. All in all, I'd say U were definitely on the right track, so keep up the good work.

Have a good one.....

Thanks friends, you have made my day just posting an answer, I didn't think anyone would. I know the cholesterol should be lower but my LDL should also. My husband's report came back not as good as mine except for the first time he has an HDL of 60. We are going to take more niacin, we will increase it to 1500mg like my doctor first suggested and increase our fish oil and double our policosanol to 20 and I am considering starting on Gugulipid . Everything I read seems to point to it as a good next step. In Dr. Whitaker's book he has a plan and Gugulipid supplements are recommended. I went on line to check it out and it is safe and none toxic to the body and works well. I have to admit that I was afraid to take the test for fear that all I have done has not worked but it obviously has. Thanks again for you kind replies it encourages me to go forth.

Like they say...U go girl....... :D Hey, as long as U are making progress that is what counts. Gee, that is a nice HDL for hubby of 60, wow!!! I'm like you, I don't want to go get tested, as I am always afraid the numbers will come back lousy and the dr. will get on my back again.

Hubby had bloodwork done yesterday, don't know if he had a lipid panel done, as this is for his cardio guy and urologist, as he has appts. next month with each of them due to them finding nodules on his prostate, plus his BP was too high. Good grief, this poor guy does all he can to be good and he still can't win, very aggravating. Hopefully his tests will come back ok, but it is going to be a VERY busy march for us. He went to the dermatologist yesterday, so far the lil lumps are nothing to worry about, and the hives he thinks hubby is getting a reaction to one of his meds. Sheesh, he is on so many, how do ya narrow it down? Hubby thinks he knows which one it is, as he had worse hives before and then when they switched his meds. they got less, so at least that was a lil good news.

Good luck to U and hubby, and keep up the good work.......

what brand of niacin do you take?

Elsie, I take the " Now" brand that I buy from the health stores. It has been a reliable brand. I take what is called No Flush and it really is easy to take. Each capsule is 500mg's and my doctor recommended it but said I should take 3 or 1500mg's, I wanted to start out slow so am taking 2 or 1000mg's. The type of niacin is Inositol Hexanicotinate. I did a lot of research on this type of niacin and found you can have good results without so many side effects. It raises the HDL and lowers the LDL and it is affordable at about $10.00 a month at my dosage. Thanks for asking :)
