Hello,

I am kinda new here. But I have been a member for quite sometime. Anyhow I have been obese all my life. :o I am 25 years old and I am 5 ft 9 and I weigh 380 lbs. :-( I have been married for six years and have one child. The reason I need help tonight is because I was once going to have Gastric Bypass Surgery. I backed out because I was scared of the risks. Anyhow I have decided that I am going to try to lose the weight on my own. I have a very supportive husband who also needs to lose a few pounds and we are going to do it together. What I need to know is, is there anybody out there who can tell me what to do about toning the fat on my body. As you know everybody who has WLS usually ends up having Tummy Tucks and full body lifts. That is not an option for me. I want to try on my own to pull in the skin and not have to resort to Plastic Surgery. Is there anybody out there who was really fat and lost weight on their own and worked out and didn't have to have Plastic Surgery. Please let me know so I can ask you how you did it. I need to know is it possble to do it. Well I hope to hear something soon.

Mary,
First of all I am SOOO glad that you have a supportive hubby. That is great! I had gastric bypass surgery on March 2, 2006. I regret it sometimes but that is just because I am the worlds pickiest eater so I struggle with that. But I have lost 52lbs so far....so for less than 2 months, that is good. But I understand why you backed out. I almost did, but at the same time, being obese carries so many health risks in itself. So for me, I felt that I had to do it.
What I would suggest is this: drink lots of water, do cardio and weight training, and alter your diet but DO NOT starve yourself. Cut out a lot of your unhealthy carbs (breads, pastas and taters) as much as possible. Curves is great if it is just you, but you mentioned that you and your hubby wanna do the weight loss thing together.....so maybe they have a good, reasonably priced gym where you are. Or does your city have a recreation center?? I dunno, where I am (utah) lots of cities here have their own rec centers. Make sure you do your weight training regularly though cause that will help with toning up and burning fat in a major way. Get a trainer if possible. That will help a lot too. If the cost is too much, then do this....look at ivillage and some other sites and do some research on exercises, etc that may be best for what you want to accomplish.

Being obese sucks, so i feel what you mean. Do some research online, talk to your doctor and get all of the information you can. I am no doctor but have done much research while taking my medical classes, and I have to say that it is a BAD idea to take those stupid "miracle" pills they sell on tv or online. If they work at all, many have ephedra or a form of it, even if the bottle says "ephedra free"....they are bad for you and for your heart. I suffered a minor heart attack from taking diet pills, so trust when I tell you that they are bad news.

Hun, I wish you the very best of luck in your battle with obesity. Focus, maintain, and believe in yourself and you can do whatever you set your mind to!!!!

Much love and hugs!
