View Full Version : Gout?

Hi, Does anyone know much about gout? My orthopedist asked me twice if I ever had gout, which I said no. He said my xray on my foot doesn't show it, so why did he ask me if I ever had it? I also read that an xray doesn't show gout, but they have to do a uric acid blood test or a needle aspiration. Which he didn't. If anyone has gout, please let me know if a swollen, red painful foot (mine is on the top of my foot) are symptoms of gout. Thanks!

Hi elphers,

If you had gout, you would know it. It is very painful. Feels like very sharp jabs in your big toe, ankle, wrist, or some such place. It is either caused by having too much uric acid in you body and or eating too many things with that in them. Like cabbage, alcohol, liver, gizzards, rich and greasy food. Stuff like that.

There is/are medicine to help it. But, you can control it mainly by your eating and drinking the correct things. My husband has it sometimes. So, no more beer and not too much cabbage. Dried Tart Cherries really help too. They are expensive, tho. He eats about 10 a day and that helps keep it away.

Hope that you do not have it and do not get it.

You would not know if you had Gout unless you were diagnosed with it. It is one of the most commonly overlooked forms of arthritis. In fact in your other post I just asked if you had it because your symptoms truly sound like the start of Grout which will progress and become more painful if not treated.
I would highly suggest you ask to be tested for it.

Kissa,
Thanks for the replies! Unfortunately, my ortho canceled on me for this Fridays appointment, and now I don't go until March 13. I do see my hemo this Thursday, should I ask him about testing me for gout? I might, since I'm still in so much pain (it's been 3 weeks now!).

It certainly can't hurt to request to be tested that way you have your results when you see your ortho. If you do in fact have Gout and your Ortho doesn't treat it you should check with a Rhuematologist.
Good luck and let us know how it goes
