Cholesterol is used in making sex hormones. Possibly could lower sex drive. Even though I don't like cholesterol medications, I have never run across the shrinking problem. I would stay away from all cholesterol medications except the natural alternatives. But again this is just my opinion from the research I have done.

Naaahhh....these are just rumors from the supplement industry who wants to promote their supplements to cure mankind including sexual libido. Just look at all the commercials on TV anymore.
I have never seen such an industry become so relentless in ripping off innocent people. It's almost shameless.

Zocor seems to be the most mildest of cholesterol meds, its been around awhile so it s a sure shot. But thats not to say that the others do not work well.

As far as ripping off people is concerned, the drug companies are the experts. And, as for Zocor, the damn poison practically crippled my father!

Thank you arizona. It did cripple my mother, she is in a wheelchair now. She had extreme myopathy from Zocor. The doctors said it would not be the Zocor because her liver panels were normal. They have found that you can have extreme myopathy without liver elevations, and the only way to determine this is with a muscle biopsy.

Hardly...and I can prove it. :D

Have you looked at all the supplements on Walmarts shelves lately? Good God....a cure for everything ! And I will tell you right now that it is ALL trash..straight to the can it goes. AND it is very very expensive. But, I'll say one thing...it sure IS packaged and advertized pretty ! A real expensive, pretty container with nothing in it that works.
You show me ONE thing on that shelve that works...just *one*. One big ripoff. For that matter alot of those in the supplement industry selling that crap ought to be prosecuted, but alas, its not regulated by the FDA, so those crooks just keep on dooping people with their false unregulated products and supplements !

That I wouldn't know. I never buy any of my supplements from Walmart. In fact, I try to avoid Walmart altogether whenever possible. But I'm sure there are all kinds of stuff on the shelves these days that are a waste of money. I try to choose my supplements carefully, and I try to get them from a reputable source. I just won't go out and buy anything without first doing a little research of my own.

Same with my father. His liver enzymes were always normal. But it got to the point where his muscles became so weak that it was an effort just to get up out of a chair. And then there was that darn neuropathy that he developed in his foot; stabbing pains that awakened him during the night. Finally he just had enough, and ditched the Zocor for good.

Arizona, is your father taking anything for his cholesterol at all. My mom took lipitor for a few yrs and her liver enzymes became severly elevated, not to mention the muscle pain. My mom is diabetic and bcuz her cholesterol is high from her bp meds, she is being told to take zorcor.

She is so afraid bcuz of the last time, she ended up in the ER. My mom now walks with a cane. The same part is her mom (my grandmom) is 81 yrs old and is in excellent health. As a matter of fact, my grandmom works 2o hrs a wk. She is a big believer in healthy diet and supplements.

I worry about my mom. She's not on any statin yet, but she is being pressured by the doctors.

Me too... I avoid wal-mart. If they can't pay their employees a living wage and give them health coverage, or pay them for overtime ...I don't intend to shop there. As far as the post saying show me anything on their shelves of being any value (supplements)... I would mention these... magnesium, potassium, CoQ10, and really Co Q10 is not a supplement, because the body does make it itself. I however prefer to get my supplements from a more reputable and socially responsible source.

One more thing...Zocor (or the makers of Zocor, merck) have patents to make Zocor with coq10 added in... You might want to read their patent to see why they wanted to add the Coq10 in the Zocor. Its interesting that the Patent office requires that something be useful to be patented. It is also supposed to work.. Why would Merck go to the expence and trouble to patent something if they didn't think there was a reason for it. Now no one else can add Coq10 to there statin because of the patent. Merck just keeps the patent on the shelf. It is a warning in Canada that Coq10 should be taken with all statins.

Lane,

No, my father has not taken Zocor or any other statin for over three years now. Of course, his numbers (TC and LDL) were much lower while he was taking them, but have since gone up. His last blood test was in January, and his numbers were as follows:

TC..........251
HDL..........86
LDL.........153
Trig..........58

Regardless of the elevated TC and LDL, I really don't consider these numbers bad at all, largely because of the high HDL and low triglycerides.

I didn't realize that blood pressure medications can raise cholesterol levels. Is that right? The doctor recently told my father, who is diabetic, to double his blood pressure medication. But I don't think it was because his blood pressure was too high. I think he increased it because of the presence of microalbumin in his urine, which is some kind of protein. So, I think he doubled the blood pressure medication in order to take some of the stress off the kidneys. I know that protein in the urine can be a sign of declining kidney function. I just hope that this will not lead to kidney failure.

Yes, but you are speaking of vitamin and mineral supplements and I am speaking of all of the other promises made by the supplement industry. Such as, weight loss, hair regrowth, metabolism boosters, skin regenerations, andYES! Even growth pills ! AND the list goes on and on... All crap, and all deceptive. And the supplement industry makes gazillions on this stuff preying on innocent people, all unregulated by the FDA. And very very expensive.

But as to Walmart...locally here they have contributed a great deal of money to many local causes and organizations. And I mean LOTS$$$.
Alot of the hype about Walmart comes from the unions who have done a very good job at indoctrinating the public over their so-called evilness.
EVEN to the point of making a movie about Walmart that included our local brand new Walmart and saying that it put one of the oldest Hardware stores in the area (family owned) out of business! And it wasn't true, because locally we KNOW the owner and he said he was suffering LONG before Walmart ever came around! Yes, a union made movie.
