Since 2001 my AST has risen from 47 to 64. The other liver function scores are normal. I had an ultrasound last year, and nothing remarkable. I have had all hepatitis etc. tests, and all negative; I have never used alcohol or other toxins. The gastro guy suggests a biopsy to see what is going on. I have read in these boards that my AST is too low to warrant biopsy. Opinion anyone? Thank you.

I would get a second opinion that sounds sort of crazy to me. A liver biopsy with an AST at 64 and everything else normal?

I would think you need better conformation to warrant a liver biopsy, as there are risks involved with the procedure. Granted they are mild, but never the less why go taking a chunk out of the liver if it's not warranted?

ALT is much more liver specific than the AST.
