I was just on Cyclen 21's (CDN) and I took them continuosly for 6 weeks. I had to go off them because I was becoming depressed, miserable, and very moody and my husband could not stand it neither could I. I was taking them cause of having a period every 14-20 days. I think they really messed up my hormones, more then they already were. So my guestion is can you take a low dose BCP that helps with periods but dose not affect your hormones so much? I am really getting at my wits end. Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and God Bless.

Kloet, I took several brands of low dose bcp before I found one that "somewhat" eliminated many of my perimenopausal symptoms. I would not say that I felt "normal" while taking bcp, but I was able to function a lot better.

Since going into peri my blood pressure became elevated so my dr. took me off the bcp. after about a year. I've found relief through various other meds. and vits. If you can tolerate bcp you might want to discuss trying a different brand with your dr. Believe me all brands of bcp are not alike. Also, compounded hormones might be an option that you can discuss with your doctor or a compounding pharmacist. :)

When my periods were too close together, my doctor put me on Aygestin, which is just progesterone. It didn't have the same side effects as birth control pills, and it regulated my period. It did make me feel bloated, but that was about it. I too, went off low dose bcp due to similiar side effects.

Good luck,
Laurie

Laurie, did Aygestin help with all the other perimenopausal symptoms? My ex-ob/gyn prescribed Aygestin to help with all my peri symptoms, but I did not take it because I did not feel comfortable with him or his suggestion. I checked with another dr. and she did not know of Aygestin being prescribed for perimenopause. :)

Good guestion, I was wondering the same thing. Although the periods are my main problem right now. I do have many other peri symptoms. I would like to find something to help with the libido. Any suggestions!!!

It took me quite a few tries to find a bcp that worked. I'm now on one called Yasmin. It's apparently quite new on the market (or just new in Canada???). Anyway, it's apparently actually designed for perimenopause. It also contains a low dose diuretic so helps quite a bit with the bloating. I used to feel like I had PMS 24/7 so this one's been heaven sent. Still get hot flashes/cold chills, etc. but they're much less frequent now. I know I couldn't live without it but everyone is so very different of course.

I think it helped with some of the other symptoms. I wasn't aware that I was having any symptoms last year while I was taking it, although when I stopped taking that and the bcp's I had taken for two months after the aygestin, I kind of went haywire, perimenopausally speaking!!

I started to have panic attacks, which I've never had before, and that symptom alone was enough to make me nuts-I really was afraid of the panic attacks. Might sweats increased, and I did have some other minor symptoms. My doctor at that time suggested Zoloft and low dose bcps again, both of which I tried, with much success. However, I only remain on the Zoloft because I don't like the side effects I get from birth control pills.

THe first kind I took was Ortho Tri Cyclen, and while it helped with many of the symptoms, it wasn't strong enough and I had a lot of breakthrough bleeding. I was then switched to Yasmin, which I decided to stop taking on my own when I read that it could increase or cause anxiety-I certainly didn't need that!

As for the Aygestin, I felt pretty good when taking it, except for bloating, so I guess it did do the trick. It definitely regulated my periods-the doctor didn't like them being too close together-and I had no symptoms of peri while taking it. It's probably worth a try!
