View Full Version : Do you need to have a pap smear after you have a hysterectomy?

I had a hysterectomy two years ago. The doctor removed my uterus and one overy because it had varicous veins (not sure of the spelling on that) around it. Recently I went to the doctor for a checkup. He checked me and I thought he did a pap smear. I waited several weeks to get a notice in the mail because usually the office will send out a card that says either the pap smear was normal or a letter asking you to contact the doctor's office. By the third week when I hadn't heard, I called the office and the nurse told me that they usually don't send off a pap smear to the lab if you have had a hysterectomy. I'm confussed, wouldn't I still be at risk for overian cancer or cervical cancer? I would think they would still need to send it off to be checked. Can anyone help me with this subject? Thanks!

Yes, you do still need pap tests. Your absolutely right that you could still get cancer. I had a radical hyst. in 1995 for invasive cancer. They took everything they could get too, including 1/3 of the vagina and all pelvic lymph nodes. I still have to have yearly pap tests. I asked about this once and my oncologist and PCP have both said I could still get cancer in the vagina. You need to see a different GYN.

Thanks Cherry for your reply. I am seeing a new PCP doctor this coming Wednesday. I will talk to her and she can do a pap smear. May God bless you.
