Hi Everyone-
I'm Backkkkkkkkkkkk. :bouncing: It was sure quite a ride but am so grateful to finally be home. I came home yesterday. I managed to find you- don't ask me how. I felt you guys with me thru the whole experience. Surgery went well but afterwards I had vomiting for 3 days and they finally had to put the ng tube in while I was awake. I struggled for the next 24 hours w/ that thing but thankfully it did the trick. I'm so very sore and feel rectal pressure- on the pot 6-7 times a day which they expect. Starting to eat low residue things again- so glad Goody mentioned bananas- I wondered if the seeds in them could cause problems??? I think I will try a small bit for supper.
I was on iv antibiotics for a week. I'm only taking tylenol for pain-doesn't do much but I'm trying to convince myself that it takes the edge off- mostly soreness. I react to pain meds far too much. I had hallucinations for days w/ meds for nausea. Never would want that again.
So glad all is going well- Renata- school can be so much fun !!! Goody- you are a riot. What ever happened w/ the bleeding? Hope TM is back soon.
I'm outta' here for now- getting too tired so must know when to stop. Thank you so very much for all of the prayers and support. I would never have made it w/out you. Later- Stackie :)

PS- Lori- I wish in hindsight that the ng tube had been done while under. My Dr. doesn't usually use them. I cannot fault him- I never had one for appendix, gallbladder or hysterectomy so I guess I was lucky before. It will prevent alot of problems and if it is the first 24 hours you won't even care. Vomiting is just the pits. If ever needed again- I would certainly not be afraid. You will be alright- just look at all of the successful cases on hereand try not to worry. :nono:
I had no shaving either. So each Dr. is different. Even the surgeons in my Drs. group are all differint in how they do it. Mine was open- incision 2-3" above navel down to pubic bone. Whatever- HEAL this gut and get on w/ life is what I say. Take care- Stackie

Welcome Back, Stackie :bouncing: Wow.....you were in for a bit longer than usual but thank goodness you are back with such a great report!! I am sorry to hear about the vomitting....wow that must have been awful!!!
Anyway....glad to hear that you are doing so well. Bananas should be no probelm at all....the seeds are not a problem even before a resection...so do not worry. :nono: What did the doctor say you can eat??? Every doctor is different but I was told everything but knew enough to progress things slowly. I found that steak and dairy products, salads. fresh fruits, raw veggies and the like will take a while. Start out with rice, potatoes (without skins of course), cooked fruits and veggies, chicken and turkey without the skin, pancakes, cereals etc.
Do not be afraid to use more than the tylenol...in fact I am shocked that you do not need anything else. From personal experience, as well as from following things around here, the pain may increase even weeks after the surgery so please do not worry about that. As nerves and muscles mend you will have that happening along with increased activity.
I hope things continue to improve. Try not to over do things and take it easy as you gradually get back to activities of daily living. Keep us posted and welcome back!! :D

Stackie!! Wow, and what a trip you had while there! Sounds like you are doing great, considering, and you had a very rough week. I was pretty much just on advil once I made it home, and it was fine as long as I doubled it and had it every few hours. Rest, and take care of yourself!!! I did OK with the food too, as long as I tried one new thing at a time. I did go through some Gas X. :D

Hi-
Has anyone had experiences w/ first diarrhea, then bit formed followed by explosive gas and mucus and then little formed. I am not sure if this is normal for the healing process. I know that the Dr. did say diarrhea and then you will eventually become regulated. I am eating and worry that now I am not going enough. Only a small bit today. Is this normal for around the 12th. day? Anybody??? Hope all are doing well. Stackie

Stackie-I know for me, I would have one day where I wouldn't go at all, and that would be followed by a day where I would go several times. Lots of back and forth, nothing too hard to manage, just way different than what I was used to. I would also get a quick, sharp pain RIGHT before I actually had to go. That is pretty much gone now. I wouldn't worry too much. I assume you are adding back foods, and you are going to have some variation as you see how you are affected by certain kinds.

Stackie ~ It's going to take a while for things to get regulated and yes it will go from diarrhea to mucus to somewhat formed etc. until the bowels finish healing and waking up. So hang in there for a while and try not to introduce too many new things at once. There is alot of colon in there.....and for a while it has been resting and not filling up with the usual foodstuff!! Remember that prep.....it emptied it dry and like any pipeline that runs dery it has to be reprimed and that does take some time with the colon!!! And remember......there are just some things that will run clear through!!!
Like salads, fruits, spicy things, raw veggies, fatty/fried foods etc........they will definitely run their course!!!
Sorry it took sometime to respond, Stackie....things on the homefront have been quite busy for me. And BTW, I know you asked whcih was sooo sweet of you.....I am having a sigmoidoscopy in April to check things out. So far so good. Keep up the good work and hope things are going well otherwise for you.

Thanks Renata and Goody- it is so helpful to know that I am not so out of the ordinary. Your explanations were so great. I am in agony tonight with what feels like backed up gas and I can't move it- just like a balloon. It is very painful. No urge to get rid of that or anything else today or even now. Going to bed and hope for some sleep. I can't lay on either side yet which might be helpful if I could. I appreciate you guys responding so much. Thanks and feel well yourselves. Renata is your pain any better? Goody - good luck w/ the test- keep us posted when done. Talk again soon. Stackie

I used a lot of Gas X the first few weeks at home. In fact, I took it with some foods that I THOUGHT would cause me gas!! And it really seemed to help, rather than waiting until I was in pain. It does work rather quickly to give you relief from that pressure and bloating.

Good Morning, Stackie  Just thought I would peek in and see how you are doing. Is the pain a little bit better??? I remember coming home and trying to not take too many pain meds and the people around here yelling at me to use them as need be!!! I sure hope you are not doing that too and not becoming some type of pain martyr (sp??)!!! :D We will noth have any of that going on around here!!! :nono: The meds are there to be used when necessary....after a resection the pain really fluctuates, in fact, I had more pain than when I first got home at around my 5 week mark!!! It came when my activities increased and the internal sutures and nerve bundles were coming back to life. Not everyone experiences this, but some do and have around here, so I thought that I would give you a heads up on that.
Hope all is well and that you are feeling a little better than last time you posted.

You guys are something else- thanks fo much for the help. I did have awful gas pains last night but am much better today. Made a tiny formed stool so at least I am sure it is going thru. More there but have to push and am afraid to do that so will see what happens. Can you imagine this conversation? Hate to start focusing on that. I don't need the prescribed pain pill yet. The extra strength tylenol takes the edge off so I go with it when I can. I have so many drug allergies that it takes alot to make me try anything. I have stuff here if it gets out of control. I am going slowly on foods as well- thanks for the advice.
Thanks for the heads up on pains- I feel so much better when I know what others have been thru. May not happen to me but if it does- others have made it thru. I'm trying to do a few simple things today like write thank you notes etc. Feels good to be able to accomplish something. :)
Hope all are well- Later- Stackie

Well here I am a few hours later- who knew??? Went formed three times this afternoon and the pain during and residual pain is still with me. Burns up inside and am really a bit unstrung with it. I suppose this is from the removal of the sigmoid colon- it has to be in that area where the pain is. I think this is going to be a long journey. I know I shouldn't be discouraged but truthfully I am a bit. Thanks for listening- Later- Stackie

Stackie ~ I really think that it is time to think about the pain med helping you out a little more. I know that you are a little apprehensive about it but you will do so much better when you are comfortable.
Also...what foods are you eating??? And what did your doctor instruct you as far as diet??? That could make a difference too. Try eating a sweet potatoe.....I heard that is easy on the digestive system. Alos try baking some apples with a little cinamon sprinkled on them....par boil them to soften them up a little bit.
I hope things get better for you....keep us posted ~ Goody

Hi Goody- I am on a low residue diet- mainly baked potato, toast, cooked cereals, some soups, crackers, baked chicken, fish etc. I have been on that kind of diet forever it seems. I did have some yogurt ice cream yesterday and a tiny bit of boiled ham on bread. Nothing extreme. I hear you about the pain meds- he wrote for vicodin- the discharge nurse said that it can cause constipation so be aware. I haven't taken any as yet. I do have a visiting nurse coming again tomorrow and I have the staples out on Monday. I had hallucinations in the hospital w/ meds for nausea- it scares me. I don't mean to be difficult- I am just apprehensive. Thanks for your continuing help. Did you go thru this??? Whar did you take? Later- Stackie

Stackie,
I found out long ago that all pain medication causes constipation to some degree and everyone is different.
Just make sure that you take a water soluble fiber supplement along with water to regulate your BMs.
I wish you well~~~Harry
