Hi
I was a -6 in one eye and a -7 in the other, so far I am 20/20 in the left eye, which I absolutely LOVE,,,but the right eye is not as sharp, but the dr. said that I am 20/25 in that eye. I had my procedure on Feb 16, so I am not even a month out yet. It's a BIG change for me, both excitedly and sometimes I am thinking that I wish both eyes were both excellent,,like when you have glasses and everything is perfect. But, I could still improve, but also, I came a long ways already!! I am impatient and a worrier and that doesn't help. I drive my husband crazy, he says to relax and see how I am after the full 3 months is out.
But on the good side, I went to the DMV and I got a new drivers license that does not require me to wear glasses---yay!
I guess if I were you I would go to the consultation and go from there. I really like not wearing glasses or messing with contact lenses,,,I had comfort problems with contacts too, I only could wear them for about 3 to 6 hours.
I hope this helps, I didn't mean to ramble on, but I know how it goes when this is such a big decision, but boy it's nice not messing with glasses.
I hope this has been helpful. Good luck in your decision.

Hi Dssam,

I was a -6.00 and it did take a while for my vision to stabilize. Also, at 9 months post-op I'm still having lots of problems with dry eye. I've heard that the higher your prescription, the increased risk of dry eye since they have to remove more tissue and destroy more nerves, and I think that might have been part of the reason I am still having problems. If you have even the slightest hint of dry eye now (discomfort from contacts, etc.) I would think twice about it. Glasses are MUCH nicer than painful dry eye.

However, this is just my experiece. As you can see, results vary widely and many people absolutely love their lasik. However, with a higher prescription, you will have a slower healing period, which can be hard to deal with for some people. If you are a worrier, just think how much you will worry when your comfort or your eyesight aren't working out that well for several weeks to months. Take your time...this is a big decision. Good luck!

I also had a -6.00 R & L. I had Lasik on 3/10/06 and its been great and I would def reccommend it. I can see as good as when I wore my contacts. I also had an astigmatism in one eye.Ive got -6.00 stigmatisom( sp) in both eyes. any one close to the same or close get good results? I was told this is as far as they can go. I dont know if this is a good thing or a bad thing. I havent had my counceltation yet but I will be soon. any help would be great.
Thanks

dssam,
I couldn't tell you what level my astigmatism was because, the only thing I really understood about my vision was that I was 20/40 in one eye and 20/60 in the other and that my astigmatism was my biggest vision problem. I don't think it was as high as yours. If I had to guess, I would say that it was somewhere in the 3's. But, I really can't remember. Anyway, I still have a hair line degree of it in one eye and a grain of sand of it in the other. Very small. But, I should warn you that my doc told me that, if I had any higher an astigmatism, he wouldn't have been able to do the surgery. However, my surgery was a year, 2 months and 1 day ago and, he told me back then that if I had gone to them 2 years previously (3 years ago to date), they wouldn't have been able to work on me because they didn't have the technology back then to correct astigmatism. So, in the past year, they may have come up with another laser that can work on higher degrees of astigmatism.
The only thing I would suggest is that you search around on the internet or call your local Better Business Bureau and see what you can find out about the doctor you have chosen. Ask him or her a ton of questions. Find out what his success verses problems are. Ask how many procedures he has done. Ask how many of those procedures have been people with an astigmatism as high as yours and what their success rate has been. Also, since most places will give you a free consultation to find out if you are a candidate or not, go get a couple of opinions. If you are worried that you may not be a candidate, another doctor may tell you that you aren't.

Do the research! It is very important!

Take care and let us know what you decide!

I don't know if you meant -6 contact prescription or -6 astigmatism, but...

I was a -6 (contact Rx) in both eyes. I had Lasik back in the summer of 2002. I actually just had an eye appt last week and one eye is 20/15 and the other eye is between 20/15 and 20/20.

One day post op I was 20/20 and 20/40.

HI
I posted once before to your post, happy as a lark, now I regret it, my vision regressed and I am not planning an enhancement. Still having dry eye and wearing glasses. My vision is 20/80, it may improve because I am not comp. healed yet, but I doubt it. Good luck!

Hello,
Unfortunately, I`m in the same situation as you are. How did we end up like this? I wish I saw this website or talked to someone with problems before I had this done.. I had so much stress and pain during these last 3 months after the procedure..

For those of you still experiencing impaired vision and or problems following eye surgery, did you get the traditional lasik or the CustomVue Wavefront? I had about 5.5-5.75 astigmatism in both eyes and had the CustomVue Wavefront performed in February 2005. The doctor told me I was right on the edge for successful surgery and may require a later enhancenment, but by the next morning I was seeing 20/20 in bith eyes, with no pain or other side effects, and a complete success. The procedure cost about $4000 but the doctor who performed the surgery had done thousands of these so I felt much more at ease. Furthermore, the CustomVue wavefront has significantly cut down on the dry eye and halo phenomenon beacuse the laser is calibrated to your eyes based on the Orbscan preparatory test done to take measurements and ensure a thick enough cornea. Hope that information helps.

I had lasik surgery one month ago and haven't been the same since. I was -6 in Left eye and -5.50 in Right. I thought I had made the best decision for me and instead have been depressed and wondering why I allowed to be talked into this! It's been a constant blur yet the examiners say I am 20/40. I am not sure what average they are considering, but I would rather have my old glasses back! They tell me to give it time. However, I don't think I can continue to have nausea from the constant blurred vision. I can't drive at night because of the major halos and star burst! I fear for my children's lives when I am behind the wheel at night as well as day. My eyes are constantly dry and feel like a dirty contact is on my eyes at all times! I would not recommend this to any one!! I would have gladly kept the several thousand dollars and spent it on new glasses as I would need them. The commercials are VERY misleading! The worst decision I have ever made! Be cautious!

My left eye was -7.25 with 3.25 astigmatism. My right eye was -6.75 with 2.25 astigmatism. I had LASIK 10 days ago. It has been a bit of a bumpy ride but settled a few days ago. I am seeing better than 20/20 and using my drops every hour to 2 hours instead of every 5 minutes like I was last week.

Good for you that it's going so well. I have improved a bit since my last post, now 20/40 in the left eye and still 20/80 in the right so I just had my lenses in my glasses adjusted accordingly. I am still hopeful to come around and not need an enhancement. I tend to agree with the other person on here that was told it takes longer for some of us with the monster prescriptions. Good luck to all and remain hopeful!

(ok, this posted incomplete the first time. My mistake with the tab button)

For those of you wondering. A prescription with someone with an astigmatism will have the first number a - (nearsighted) or + (farsighted) with a number next to it, then a number like -2.00 and a third number which is the axis. Those with no astigmatism will only have the first number:

Here are examples:
nearsighted -3.25 -2.50 95
farsighted +2.00 -1.75 180

The higher the number the worse your vision. If I had a -6.00 astigmatism, I think I would definitely do it. That's a very high number. My husband has lasik 5+ years ago and never regreted it. He only had an astigmitism. I'm looking into for me. I'm VERY farsighted.

I am still confused. My vision was -6.00 myopia (nearsightedness). I have never even heard of someone with minus (or plus!) 6 astigmatism.

Also, LASIK is best for people with myopia. It was only recently that LASIK was available to do much more than correct mild astigmatism.

I had LASIK done in May 2000. The full story is posted elsewhere on this board.

It worked for me, but not for my girlfriend at the time who did it with me. She reverted to needing contacts/glasses within 6 months.

Now, six years later, I am at back to about 20-35, maybe even 20-40 in one eye AT NIGHT. During the day I am probably 20-25 or 20-30. The first year after surgery I was 20-15, then 20-20 for a few years, then eventually drifted to where I am now.

I probably need another LASIK, but the consultations I have undergone indicate that if I have another one, my myopia will be cured but my close up vision (farsightedness), which the doctors called nothing less than phenomenal for anyone of any age let alone mine (30s), will be hampered. So in other words my myopia would be cured but I would probably become farsighted.

So, just so you know, because vision changes over time anyway, even if the LASIK is a success you will probably need another surgery eventually.

LASIK does not work for everyone. However, most of the side effects will go away. The dryness will go away within a matter of months, and the halos within a year or so. However, you will achieve your optimal vision (notwithstanding the haloes) in 90 days - this is the way it was for me.

As I posted, I went from -6.00 myopia in both eyes to 20-15 within 90 days of surgery, then 20-20 in years 2 and 3 and now six years later I am about 20-35 at night, maybe 20-25 or 20-30 during the day, which is not bad. My close up vision is phenomenal. I will probably have a follow up or get some night time driving glasses soon.

In short - LASIK does work, but nothing lasts forever.
