I've been on NSAIDS for years and was fine but now my stomach is hurting. I have chronic inflammation that causes pain and I'm unable to get off of the stuff. Does anyone have a suggestion of what type of medication I could take for severe inflammation? I seem to be able to go for 24 hours once a week or once every other week with just taking tylenol not a NSAID but I can hardly function and it does nothing for pain control.

Hey Taape
Would you mind telling us what your diagnosis is? It may help us to answer your question better.
There are many ways to control pain. With a diagnosis, it may help us to suggest a few things.
Take care.

ARABGER,
I've got several herniated discs and foot pain and numbness. Mostly the numbness is causing the pain and there seems to be no pain medicine to control that. Ice helps but doesn't do much. Do you have any ideas how to treat inflammation? Thanks

I was on ibuprofen for several years and also have to take Nexium along with it. Then my blood pressure started going up and I have always had low BP. So I stopped taking it and now only take it for a few days at a time and only a couple times a month. The pain sometimes is horrible, but I would rather suffer with it, than to start having problems because of taking it.

Best to see a Gastrogestrologist and schedule an endoscopy to see what's happening down there, (the lovely pipe down the throat thing,) about this as long term NSAID use wreaks the stomach, I'm sure that's not new news to you. Sounds like it's also time to get on a PPI. Nexium, Losec, etc, many different types they help prodect the stomach linning and let it heal if need be.

Taape,
Are you seeing a pain management doctor? If not I would suggest trying to get into one. It sounds like you have chronic pain that would warrant seeing a PM. A good PM Dr will use different types of treatment.
Different ways other than meds may be, injections of steroids. This helps to shrink the inflammation. There is also Physical Therapy, Massage, Water therapy.
Unfortunantely, NSAIDs like Ibuprofen can eventually hurt the lining of the stomach.
It also sounds like you have some nerve pain going on. Have you tried Lyrica or Nuerontin? These are medications that help relieve nerve pain.
Hopefully you'll find some relief. I really think you should go see a PM, someone that specializes in treating chronic pain. Thats if you're not already going...

ARANGER,
Thanks for the suggestions. I haven't seen a Pain Management doctor yet so I'll ask for a referral. While taking NSAIDS I could manage my pain pretty well but not now.

Taape,
I have pretty much the same thing going on. I also got to the point where Nsaids didnt cut it anymore. I have had a couple epidural steriod injections and have slightly benefited from that. I also take an opiate pain reliever (Norco) and Neurontin. I think once you get to a PM doc he or she will get you some relief and a better quality of life with a little less pain.
good luck

Pdawg,
Thanks for your suggestions. I've asked to see a specialist and I'm waiting for an appointment. I've never been able to handle narcotics but I'll see what the doctor recommends. There's got to be something to take for the inflammation that won't kill my stomach. Have had ESI's in the past but I still needed a NSAID everyday in adddition. It's very frustrating.

I had to stop taking NSAIDs because they cause me horrible stomach problems and acid reflux. It got to the point where I would start coughing up junk after every meal due to my acid reflux, and now that I've stopped them I have no problems with acid reflux at all.
I was suggest buying some acidophilus. It will help rebuild the lining in your stomach. I suggest this for anyone who takes meds that mess with their tummy, since long term use can lead to ulcers and what not. The acidophilus helps add back the healthy bacteria in your stomach, thereby regulating things. Its totally safe to take, won't interact with anything, and you can find it at any drug store and most stores in the vitamin section! Even if you stop taking NSAIDs, if you have been taking them for awhile, I'd still try taking the acidophilus for a few weeks to help your tummy get back to normal.
