Do you believe in these so-called "negative calorie" foods? And if you eat a small orange or 1/2 cup plain steamed broccoli do you still add these calories to your daily total?
I mainly eat ALL negative calorie foods in this case, but I've always added 70 calories for oranges, 25 for the broccoli. Is this wrong?

Lyds19089,
Calories are calories. The body uses calories for fuel, and stores the extra as fat. There is no such thing as negative calories.

i agree, calories are calories. however, you are not likely to gain weight from fruits and vegetables because of their fiber content etc- versus eating more starchy breads or foods with empty calories-
but of course..too much of anything is not good
...on weight watchers- fruits and vegetables are 0 points.
the problem with only eating fruits and vegetables is the lack of fat- your body needs fat to survive..without fat your body will slowly deplete and will basically eat itself so be careful and eat your healthy fats! (avocados, walnuts, olive oil etc)

I'm familiar with the Catabolic Diet that's based on eating foods that supposedly take more calories to digest than the actual calories in the food. It's been around since the 1930's but all the research since then has proven that there's really no such thing as negative calorie foods. Don't get me wrong. The foods they say are "negative calories" are all healthy foods. Some foods might take slightly more energy to digest than others, but you're going to burn a certain amount of calories by thermogenesis anyway. If you lost weight on a diet like this, it would be because the foods were low in calories and fat, not because you're getting negative calories.
You say that's what you you mainly eat. Are you also eating foods with at least a some fat and protein?

Each day I try and eat an apple, orange, banana, broccoli, lettuce/cabbage, peppers, chicken, protein powder with water sometimes peanut butter, other type of protein (ex tuna), whole wheat weight watchers bagel with light cream cheese. I need to add some more healthy fats to my diet I think, sometimes I'll eat like 10 almonds.
I also need to up my calories because I'm afraid of being in starvation mode. For about a whole month I ate about 1300 but whatever I calculate in my head is always more than if I write down everything. Yesterday, my head overcalculated my calories by 400!! I round up too much I think.
Even though I only lost 10 pounds, I have a LOT of muscle for a girl. Which I guess weighs more than fat...

Wow, wish I could eat that healthy. LOL
Your diet sounds really healthy. A good way to add some healthy fats? How about a salad with your favorite types of lettuce and vegetables, then add some crumbled Ricotta cheese, or Bigio cheese if you can find it. Top it off with an olive oil based dressing. A bit of avacado in salad is fantastic too. All good fats.

Yes you are right there are some foods that are negative calories. I have a great personal interest on healthy eating and follow it carefully. Negative calories are basically foods which require more energy to digest it, than what energy it provides. These include foods such as celery and brussel sprouts.
If you have any questions please pm me. thank you :)

first of all congraulations for eating these negative calories - they arent the tastiest of foods.
you are right there is such a thing as negative calories. Negative calories are in foods such as brussel spouts and celery. They require more energy to digest than what energy they consist of. So say for instance celery has 20 calories (estimate) it may take 30 to digest it. :)

Not true at all, if you eat a couple sticks of celere your body uses more calories to digest it then you get from it. Same can be said for small amounts of lettuce. Most other vetables will add calories to your diet, but your body uses a lot of calories to digest vetables. They are a great weapon when it comes to maintaining a lean physique. I eat 8 servings a day.
