View Full Version : Follicle Size and IUI

I have been taking 100 mg of clomid (cycle days 5-9) plus injectibles for an IUI. I went in for my ultrasound today (cycle day 13). The nurse said only two looked big enough (19 and 17.5). There were a few others that weren't quite as big. There are no male factor issues.

I'm really concerned because I thought that the goal was to have at least 3 good sized follicles and I only have two. Does anyone have any ideas as to the chances of the IUI working???? I could really use some insight as to what is a good follicle size.

Also, does this mean I don't have good quality eggs if I don't respond with a lot of big follicles?? or is egg quality/egg reserve unrelated to the number of follicles that get produced via meds????

Any thoughts would be so helpful!

They really have no idea when they are looking at your follicles which ones will be the one(s) to release an egg. For all they know, the small ones could release eggs and the large ones not. I have always been told to never rule-out the little ones and I have a friend who got pregnant with Triplets will only 1 large follicle, which means there must have been 2 small ones that released eggs, as well. It's really just their best guess that the large ones will release the eggs.

I only had 2 "mature" follicles, (my doctor considered anything over 18 "mature") during the whole time I was on Clomid (3 cycles).

Just remember, it only takes one of each to make a baby. Good Luck and Baby Dust coming your way!!

I don't know too much about IUI, but I do know that every follicle has its own potential, regardless of size. There are women who have a bunch, and still there IUIs don't work. And I'm sure women have gotten pg on only one good follicle too.
What I do know is that the number or size of the follicles does not have a relation to the quality of that egg. I'm doing IVF and they say they wait until they are a certain size b/c they can't even attempt to fertilize the eggs unless they are "mature." But there is no way to tell the quality of the egg until they take them out and examine them. Then, fertilizing them will lead to even more info.

At the IVF seminar I was at last night, they said that not all follicles will release eggs, not all eggs will mature, not all mature eggs will fertilize, not all fertilized eggs will continue to split and grow, not all of those will implant, and not all implanted ones will continue to go on to be born. Anything can happen. So, I guess that is the same situation for IUIs.

Good luck and sticky baby dust to you!
