Hi everyone, hope all is going well for you. I haven't been on here in a while, I've been so sick. I had a flare up a couple weeks ago and my body just hasn't been the same since, I think I greatly underestimated the effects of Fibromyalgia. During this time my doctor has been wonderful and has been such a blessing in my life. He keeps up on fibromyalgia and the different treatments and medicines that are coming out.
He recently put me on Mirapex, which is a prescription that originally came out in 1997 for those suffering from parkinson's disease, Mirapex may be able to reduce your fibromyalgia symptoms significantly. In particular, Mirapex may be able to:
*reduce muscle pain
*decrease muscle stiffness
*improve range of motion and mobility
I've been taking it for 2 weeks now and have noticed small improvements. I'm still increasing my doses in order to get to the recommended 4.5 mg dosage. One of the major effects i've noticed is significant weight loss, which is nice for those of us FM sufferers who have gained weight from taking our other medications.
I will keep everyone updated but in the mean time may I suggest that you put "Mirapex and Fibromyalgia" in your search engine and see what information you can find, here's a website to get you started on finding out more:

I have been on Mirapex as a last resort med for about a month. I did not initially tolerate the drug very well and have had to work my way up to the 4.5 recommended dose. So far, I cannot tell it is helping me, but I am not quite up to the 4.5 dose. The one really nice side affect is I fill full most of the time. I have gained 40 pounds in the past two years and am looking forward to lightening up a bit. My doctor has only given this medication to one other patient. I do not know how that patient is doing. I did not ask, as I did not want to bias my personal opinion of how this drug works for me.
I am desparate for relief. By the way, my current doctor, a Rheumatologist I've been with since 1997, will not give me any type of medication to help me sleep. I can't help but wonder why he would take such a stubborn stance regarding sleep meds. I am thinking of changing doctors since I have moved recently and making the drive across town to my current doctor is very draining. I understand the sleep deprivation is a huge part of Fibro. It would be wonderful to get a regular good nights sleep and I am sure it would help with the Fibro.

I had been with my Rhumie for over 13 years. He did not HEAR me anymore...never took new symptoms (I'm getting on in age now) seriously...just wrote scripts for drugs without looking at me anymore. He DIDN'T TRY to help me any longer. Especially with pain meds. I think you can stay with a doc tooooo long.
I'm now going to see an internist (no rheumie) and getting referred on to the pain clinic at the University here. They are treating pain with METHADONE which I hear is AWESOME.
I'm 27 years down the road with this now, 57 years old, and it has not gotten any better, but only worse. I don't endure the pain like I use to. Now add age problems to it (arthritis, facet joint, yada yada) and you have a very sick lady at only 57. I am in desperate need of pain relief. I have been taking ultram 4 a day for over 10 years. Why wouldn't my old doc think I needed a change. Crazy. Crazy that we who suffer so have to beg for help because a few abuse the market.
Blessings to you and YES, I hope you will move on to a Doc who will help you get some SLEEP. That's nuts........that's usually the FIRST THING THEY DO, and so important. :D

dear marcia and blessings,
there are thousands and thousands of doctors. fire the one you have and shop around. it is worth the hassel when you find that one special helper. i went thru 17 doctors before i found laura. along with 6 other good caring doctors we take care of me. mostly i do the all the work. as it should be. they assist me.
do not settle for less than you require. do not victimize yourself by staying with a doctor you do not feel totally safe with. take charge. a doctor is hired help, just like a plummer. if the plummer does a lousy job you won't be calling him again, right? same thing. we pay them, not the other way around.
and she leaps lightly off her doctor soap box once again, giggle.
peace and empowerment,
bluelakelady

 Candimichelle,
This is amazing news!!! Hi, I am new here. Just found it today and I am thrilled that I have. After reading your post regarding Mirapex, I quickly went and googled it. I have to say I am astounded with what I found. Could there actually be something that will help??!! Tomorrow I plan to call my doc to make an appt as soon as possible. I want it YESTERDAY. My only concern is that I read that it is not an "approved" treatment as of yet. Do you think I will have any trouble getting my doctor to or insurance company to ok it? What state do you live in? Maybe I shall move LOL. This is the first exciting thing I have read in a very long time!!! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

There is also a new medicine called Lyrica. It is meant to stop the pain of shingles. I have been taking it for two months and it has done wonders. :bouncing:

I took it for about a week and gained 5 pounds.....................YIKES.......d oes everything that helps make you gain weight. I couldn't really tell if it helped in that period of time, but I'd be more depressed if I were out of pain and got fatter.
It's hard to WIN. Glad it's helping you.
I'm taking Licorice with some good degree of relief.

You know, you'd think that about less pain and more fat, but as it turns out being in that situation, the extra weight is actually not helping my fibro symptoms at all. Huge catch 22. Now I feel horrible about being heavier and don't feel as good physically because of it. It's a big stinker!!!!

That's what I'm talking about. If I get less pain, but more fat.....I'm still a loser.....and it does hurt me MORE, because I have bad disc and bad problems with arthritis and that weight on my joints is soooooooo much worse.
It feels like a downhill slide most of the time to me, so I do as little meds as I can stand so I don't get FATTER ! AND get in more pain and DEPRESSION from the weight.
LOSE, LOSE is how I feel sometimes !

If you haven't already, check with your doctor or do some internet searching on medicines that don't cause weight gain. I did not do this as I had no idea when I first started meds. Would you believe I was on three different meds that all caused weight gain? OUCH!! I have gone from a size 3/5 to a size 16 in two years and am just devistated about it. I stopped all my meds last summer and have not lost an ounce. I just went to the doctor yesterday to discuss the whole weight think. I am having some blood work done. Not liking the new me!!

Oh my goodness..this weight gain is the most depressing thing that could happened on top of everything else we deal with..pain, memory, fatigue....etc. I weighed 120 four years ago, came down with fibro and meds for the pain...etc.....169 now. I will there was another way.

WOW weight gain oh joy. When my disease first came out full blown in 98 I was not doing too badly just thought ok I am getting older and arthritis is setting in oh now problem. My weight shot up to 230 pounds and I knew I had to do something about it but couldn't. The pain was too much and I was not able to tolerate it. Lucky for me that my husband was transfered to Florida which seemed to make a world of differance for me. The doc I got there was wonderful. He really listened and I loved him. I miss him a lot. I hae not found one that great since then and almost wish I could move back there. I stay in the dryer climates now.

oh man oh man, weight gain. its an ugly rude uninvited guest to the party. I also have weighed anywhere from 115 to 120 all my life. In fact i weighed 120 3 years ago as well. My weight shot from 120 to 150 in 3 yrs time. Im on synthroid for thyroid nodules (doc thought maybe thats why i was gaining weight) but have put on more pounds either way while on synthroid.
It IS a lose lose situation like someone said. The pain meds help with the pain but make you gain weight therefore you develop arthritis of the knees because of the extra sudden weight, thus you hurt all over again. Then its harder to breathe easier. I hardly eat, i eat 5 small meal a day and watch my sugar intake plus carbs intake, i eat good vegetables and fruit and grains with protien and still am gaining weight.
My rhuemie keeps telling me not to gain any more weight cause it will make things worse for me, for the fibro, but HOW can you stop gaining weight? i cant exercise cause my feet swell up so much and start hurting so bad if try to go walking. I dont have the energy to do any aerobics, i wish i did. Im tired all the time, its like a catch 22. A very vicious cycle, a merrygo round and i dont know how to make it stop. I look at myself in the mirror and i honestly dont recognize the person i see there anymore.
Hubby of course is the sweetest, says he loves me no matter how much i weigh but thats not the problem the problem is the weight just adds more stress to the heart and body and joints.
I think its TIME for fibro to really come out of the closet, we need representatives who will take up our cause, celebrities who will come forth and admit they too suffer from this DD. Of course celebrities can afford the lipo suction and surgeries needed to remove the access weight while we cant. Not that id go under the knife so lightly anyway even if it was a free option to me.
I had one friend whom i hadnt seen in years tell me once, that i shouldnt have "let myself go", should have nipped the weight gain in the bud when it first started. LIKE HELL! did she think i hadnt even BOTHERED to try?? the nerve of some people. There was a time when fibro wasnt as severe as it is no and id bike 10 miles daily 5 times a week. I cant do that anymore. So, where do we go from here?? i think we're all in the same rocky unstable boat, but hey theres no one else id rather be in that boat than with you guys. Doesnt mean im glad were on this journey, but if we must be on it, theres no other greater, more down to earth, loving, compassionate, on fire people than you guys.
