Has anyone seen the national news and or your local news about people driving while asleep after taking ambien? We have had some stories here on the board about the strange things some people do under the influence of ambien but the news report was a very scary thing to think about.
The news said that people either get pulled over and accused of drunk driving or just wake up after they had an accident.
I take ambien with no problems, but all this does make you wonder!

The report that I read did state that most of those people who had problems did take more than the recommended dose.

The ones I heard about either, like you said, took more than their dose was or took the right dose but at the wrong time. They talked about someone who took it on their way home so it'd go ahead and kick in by the time they got home.
I took it for awhile and if for some reason I stayed up later than planned, I had trouble walking, kinda like I'd been drinking too much.
Maybe after all this news about it, people will be more careful about taking it.

Hello Everyone, I take Ambien CR every night. I take it about 8 o'clock
and I sleep a good restful 8 to 9 hours. I wake up refreshed with no hang-
over. It's the very best thing that's been done for fibromyalgia in my case.
I can understand it being misused by taking more than one should or mixing
it with alcohol or meds given for anxiety. Before the doctor put me on Ambien,
I only slept a few hours at night and it was not very restful. Older people have a
difficult time getting good sleep and I hope this news on the TV dosen't cause
doctors to be afraid to prescribe Ambien. Sleep well my fibro friends!

April and Ct that was interesting, I didn't hear that about taking it at the wrong time or more than they should. How 'dumb' is that! I mean it is a sleeping pill I would think anyone should have enough since to not take it and then knowingly drive!
Ambien does work very fast for me. When I first started taking it our little local pharmacist said be sure to go right to bed when you take it. He said he had a lady break her leg on ambien. He said she took it early thinking she could 'fiddle' around the house for a while then climb her stairs to bed. You guessed it down the steps she went and a broken leg. I took his word for it and I take it and get in bed immediately. I have answered the phone to talk to my children but stopped that, I was too much of a comedy show. No more laughs on Mom!
Bilij I agree ambien has been the best thing for me, for my fibro. Sleep is something I have a great deal of problems with and of course the quality or lack of sleep depends on how bad I hurt. Without it I would be a mess.

 Hi this is my first time posting on healthline. Anyway Hi fibro buddies. I started taking Ambien and I would be in big trouble if they take it off the market because some people abuse it. A whole pill made me to sleepy in the morning so I started taking half a pill now I usually take a third of the pill. I'm a little concerned about long time use damaging other parts of my body. I also take blood pressure and cholestrol drugs. I HATE taking pills and I worry about interaction.

Welcome Sunny!
I take a 10mg ambien everynight, I started on 5mgs but had to increase the dosage for more sleep. I will be trying ambien CR when I get time to check with the insurance co. to see if they have approved it on our plan yet and what it will cost.
I have been taking ambien for 3yrs (?) now and as far as I know don't have any damage from it yet. I agree it would be bad for me if they took it off the market, but I don't think that is going to happen. Wouldn't we be a sight a bunch of sleep deprived, fibro foggy people out on the street corner trying to score some ambien!!!!

I was prescribed Ambien for a short time. It's been awhile back now, but I don't recall having any problems with it. Once my RX ran out though I never returned to rheumy doc for more; instead I found that OTC Melatonin works just as well for me as the Ambien did. I rotate between the Melatonin and Tylenol PM just so that I am not continuously taking the same thing. The Melatonin is the most effective for me.

I've been taking Ambien for about 3 years. Without it I don't sleep. I have a lot of short term memory problems that really started long before I took it, but I've heard from a lot of folks today. I've been diagnosed with dementia, and I really hope this medicine isn't blamed for memory problems.

Jam that is so great that OTC melatonin and tylenolPM works for you. Stay with that as long as you can, I hope it works forever for you. I would not take any sleep meds if I didn't need to and actually I fought taking them for a long time.
MissHelen, I am like you, without ambien I don't sleep. I have had a sleep test done and I didn't sleep there either. Just like I told them, my problem is with not being able to go to sleep and then not stay asleep when and if I ever go to sleep. I don't think ambien has a lot to do with dementia. I think yes it can make you a little forgetful sometimes if you don't sleep it all off but then so do a lot of other drugs for fibro and other diseases.
With all drugs, I think it is in using commen sense about the way you take it and being aware of how the drug effects you. I know that when I am flaring bad I may need extra ambien help to sleep. Such as last night, I woke up again 4hrs after taking a 10mg ambien and I thought no way am I going to fight this on and off sleep one more night I need to sleep to get through this flare....so.....I got up and took 1/2 of a 10mg at 1:30am and went back to sleep. It really helped now I can try to help myself get out of this flare, cause I had a better nights sleep. I would not have taken the extra ambien if I had to get up early and go somewhere, but I knew I had the chance to sleep in as late as I wanted this morning and it was wonderful!!!

Well I took the recommended dose and i took it a 9pm. I'd awake at 7am...so I got the proper amount of sleep. And still I was groggy enough to almost hit a parked car while I was driving. And if you have to remember anything, forget it. That drug affected me in a bad way. It also put me in a bad, nasty, depressed mood the rest of the day. I would rather stay up all nite than to take Ambien again

rstarre, I would say ambien is not the sleep med for you! That was a bad experience for you. I hope you can find something that does help you sleep better, it seems sleep is so important for us fibromights. Of course we are individuals and thats why the drug companies get rich with so many different kinds of drugs.

Hi to all about Ambien,
I have fibro, RA and also to top it off .. a lung infection, MAC. As to the Ambien, I take it. The problem I have is I don't really feel like I sleep a deep sleep. It also at times tends to give me a headache and I have really CRAZY dreams. I do agree about watching when and how you take it. I take it when I am in bed and before I take it I look at the clock and count ahead 8 hours. If I can't stay in bed and sleep until the 8 hrs. have past I don't take it. My lung spec. give me prescrip. to try the CL one but for the life me I can't find it. I find the other prescription from him but not that. With any medicine some people can take it and others can't and one has to be responsible as to how and when they take it. I take it strong pain medicine and I try to be very careful with how and when I take it. I like ask my husband if he feels like driving so I can take pain med. if he doesn't I don't take it. I just suffer the pain and if too bad we stay home. I also have when really bad have asked someone else to monitor my pain med. and keep the bottle. Live each day one at a time!

wel, I take Ambien and I take it correctly and I am one of those idiots who does crazy things; I sleep walk and do some wild things like paint my kitchen cabinets with polka dots (they are beautiful wood oak) and I painted two walls in my hallway that look like bruised skin. I have called people and written letters that, when read to me by the recipient cause me to blush! they all laugh, but it embarrasses me. I 'see" things, too; I see small critters all over my room. I even took my car out of the garage and parked it in front of the house; I have been told I do these things and i have complete amnesia concerning it. One night I got up and painted everyone's faces in THIER sleep and took pictures of them. when they woke up the next morning with hearts all over their cheeks and foreheads, they knew granny was up to ambien again; I don't take it unless I am desperate because of those things; I took it for three years and it was great; all of a sudden, those things started happening. And I will fall asleep then wake up within an hour and do those things; I want to try the CR because I think it will keep me asleep. I have done so many strange things that cause everyone to laugh and they keep my letters - but I am afraid I will do something dangerous; I no longer take it when I am home alone or have my grandkids over.

Wow Rosie, that is scary. Are you going to continue to take it? My rheumy does not prescribe Ambian for these exact reasons. He actually gave me an RX for Sonata but I have yet to fill it.
I guess this is a fast acting drug and one that works best for the ones that wake up in the middle of the night and have a hard time falling back to sleep. You must not take this if you cannot get at least 4 more hours of sleep (so if you have to be up at 6am, don't take this at 3am).
Anyone have success with Sonata?

I took sonata as a substitute for ambien when I was in such a flare and so profoundly fatigued the doc suggested another sleep med. It took longer to work and I woke up every two hours but fell back to sleep right away.
Rosie those are scary stories about ambien, if I ever start doing things like that I will stop taking it and try something else. I never take ambien when my grandbaby is here either, I am afraid I will sleep too deep and he will need me.

I have seen the news about Ambien. I have taken Ambiem for 3 yrs because my fibro pain won`t let me get to sleep. The thing that I do is get in bed set my tv to go off at 10 30. I take my ambiem while i`m in bed and know I won`t be getting up again.I turn off the light and just let sleep come, some nights it does come and sometimes it don`t come for a few hours. Anyway the lights are out the tv will turn itself off so i don`t have to worry about getting up for anything. This is how the dr told me to take this medicine.I have neverr had one bad experience from it nor do I have any dreams. My one piece of advice is to take it as prescribed and take it after you go to bed and do not get up again. The time of night that is right for you ,you will have to count the hours so you know how long 8 hrs will be in the mornings.I wake up in the mornings and never have the morning fog. It has been a wonderful medicine for me. I just hope that people who use it will be responsible and not deside they can take it then go get in the car and drive to the to store for a pack of cigarettes.Thats not how its suppose to be used. When they get caught then it makes it hard for the rest of us to try to convience our dr that we are using it in the right way.I hope you all have a restful night and the fibro bug is good to us all in the morning. God Bless....jbot

I have fibro and have been on ambien since it came on the market. I will say that when I had first started to take it my youngest daughter didn't tell me she needed something from the store for school the next day so I had JUST taken my pill and figured ok this will be fine the store is right down the road and I can get her there and be back before it kicks in. :nono: MAN WAS I WRONG!! We came out of the store and I was opening the door and WAM it hits. Thankfully she knew how to drive even tho she didn't have a license and got us home safely. I know I was wrong to let her but it was a toss up between that or risking both our lives and someone elses by driving myself. NEVER AGAIN did I let that happen.
The other problem I have realised about ambien is that its like takeing a roofy so to speak in that you really dont remember what happens from shortly before to shortly after you take it and then go to bed. I have realised that its best to take the pill and go right to bed with in like 10 mins and no more otherwise I will forget something and it could be something important.
I dont really care what happens or what the news says or anything else about ambien personally. A little over a year ago I didn't have health insurance and was taking all this other stuff some of you mentioned as well as nightquil and other things just to get some decent sleep. Well I have had ensomnia all my life and now how this disease called fibro to make it even worse. My longest stretch with ensomnia has been about 2 weeks then it seems to even out and I get some much needed sleep finally. A little over a year ago I ended up going like 4 weeks with not much sleep other then an hour here or two there and so on. I ended up getting what I thought was the flu. The first day I didn't feel well I had a lump on my breast and figured I had another cyst, oh great. Take care of it and it usually goes away. Compounded by feeling like total crap from this disease and what I thought was the flu I took nighquil and dayquil and rested. On a friday went out to eat with my daughter and a friend of hers and only got 1/4 of the way thru and had to go throw it all up. She MADE me go to the hospital, now mind you I dont have insurance at this time. Went to the bathroom and figured ok while I am here I will get my breast looked at too. It was red on the right side and the lump was larger. In the 3 hours we were there and it took to get seen by a doc....... The redness had taken over the breast and the entire thing was hard. Well they did all their tests and stuff like a hospital will do and when the next doc came into the room he introduced himself and he was a general surgeon. OMG NOT the thing you want to hear when your in for possable flu and something wrong with your BREAST. He informed me they were not sure if I was gonna need surgery or not but I had an infection that tends to come from a scratch or bug bite, of which I Had neither, but continued to inform me that I had put it off for so long and that the infection had taken over so much if I Had waited just one more day to be seen there would be nothing more they could do for me other then make me comfortable while I died.
So I was in the hospital for a week and was so sick because this thing got much worse but I was on IV Antibiotics that seem to have gotten rid of it by the end of the stay. I am fine now but it was so scarey and as I said I dont care what they say about it because to me with such a close call I will be on it for the rest of my life even if I have to pay out of pocket to get it. I would rather be on it then have no sleep and die because my immune system is so low and compromised that I get something else and die because of it. :D

Hi, my name is Barbara and I'm new to the healthboard. I have found it to be very very reassuring. I have had 2 laminectomies. I thought that I was the only one in the world who had to have a redo surgery because I had re-herniated the disc after the 1st surgery. I have grown into a very dark depression. I have nerve pain that is indesribable. I take lyrica, 600 mg per day, amitriptaline for sleep (50mg), effexor for depression (150mg) 4 times per day I take dilaudid (8mgtable) for breakthrough pain, and hydromorph-contin (18mg every 8hrs). I'm so sad, I can't seem to come out of this funk.
I feel like I'm never going to feel pain free again. I don't like "cry babies" and I know I shouldn't feel like this. It's not mature. I have 3 beautiful girls, ages 13, 11, and 10. One of the things I find the hardest is just keeping up in the day to day activities, like cooking, cleaning up, getting them to bed. Getting them ready for school in the morning.
And their such good kids, little troopers. My middle one does the vacuuming now for me as I can't do this any longer. My youngest one cleans out the litter box, god bless her sould. My oldest one does the dishes if I can't bend over slightly. It's a really awkward bend over when I do the dishes. I think the counter is at a weird height, or I'm just plain weak when I bend.
Sorry to run on like this, if you don't want to tell me what you take for pain I understand, but if would like to I'd really appreciate knowing what you take -
Sincerely,
Barbara

The problems do arise when you take more than your body needs.....I take 5mg Ambien, but I was going through a really stressful time at work so I thought I needed 10mg to get a deeper nights sleep. So for about a week or so I was taking the 10mg. Well once I woke up sitting on the floor in front of the fridge eating grapes out of the bin or I found empty containers of different foods on the counter the next morning. I also have a friend with Lupus that takes 10mg, she was forgetting that she took it and ended up taking two of them a night for about a week or so. Her husband found her in different places in the house or walking around in her sleep. When we both went back to our usual dosages, all the wierd stuff ended just like that. So to make a long story short.....taking Ambien the way you should, it is still the safest sleep inducer out there, along with being a life-saver for people with FM!!!!! Insomnia is a killer for us with FM.

Yep, I know for a fact that problems arise from taking more than your usual dosage. During a very stressful time at work, I thought by increasing my dose from my usual 5mg to 10mg, that I would get an even deeper longer nights sleep. Well after about a week I woke up one night sitting on the floor in front of the fridge eating grapes from the vege bin. Also finding empty containers of food on the counter the next morning. I have a friend with Lupus, who takes the full 10mg, but she has a tendency to forget things like taking meds (we monitor her very close) but somehow she was able to get into her meds and was taking 2 a night for a few days. Her husband was finding her in different areas of the house during the night, along with finding her sleep walking. After we both went back to our usual dosages, the problems stopped just like that! So Ambien taken as it should be, it is still the safest sleep inducer out there. Along with being a life-saver for us with FM!!!!

Welcome babsbro,
That is very interesting about the higher doses of ambien making you do those things. I take 10mgs and on occasion, when I wake up and can't go back to sleep, I take another 1/3 or 1/2 pill. I have also had to take an extra bit when I just couldn't fall asleep. I think I will keep in mind what you said about the wierd things happening with the bumped up dosage. I have never had any problems with it and don't want any.
